Sailorlite Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 I have both the 49 Liter and the 28 Liter top cases for my RT. The 49 works great, but the 28 is very difficult to get open and I don't know why. When its key is in the Open position, the 49's top unlatches with a reasonable push on the button. The 28 on the other hand requires an extreme push on the button before the handle releases. I'm afraid that next time I won't be able to get it open. Have any of you been into the innards of one of these cases? Will it all become clear if I undo the screws holding the rectangular handle/latch assembly? Is there a common adjustment required? Does BMW have an instruction/installation document? I could use some guidance here.
Stephen H Posted November 21, 2008 Posted November 21, 2008 If you just put some pressure on the latch flap (the piece that pops up when it opens) at the same time as you push the button, .... then release them both at the same time.... you will find that it opens easily

I had the same problem ... but was covered under warranty ...
latoncfii Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 Had the same problem, except in my case I could only open it by carefully moving the lid to the left and pushing the button quite hard. Same thing for closing the lid. I bent the left catch mechanism very gently and less than 1/16" to the right and that helped a bunch but didn't completely alleviate it.
Sailorlite Posted November 22, 2008 Author Posted November 22, 2008 This double push procedure does the trick! Thank you for the suggestion. I suspect there's some kind of internal mechanism adjustment that would make it easier (or possibly worse) - but I'll save that for another day.
