moshe_levy
All- Just stopped at the local UJM superstore to check out new gear. I noticed an ICON back protector, about $100. I know BMW sells one too, for about $175 or so. More than one vs. the other, I'm wondering if any of you out there wear these for general riding / commuting applications. I tried on the ICON and got it to fit comfortably after adjustment, but getting it on and off was cumbersome. It's already a process getting into all the gear now that winter's here. Anybody have any firsthand experience with these? -MKL PS - If it matters, I'm an ATTGAT believer and my FG jacket and pants have CE armor all around. Perhaps a back protector is overkill, perhaps not - I have no idea. Link to comment
David
If you go with one, try the Sidi. Link to comment

GregB
I have the BMW one and it is very nice. I tried the Icon one briefly before that and found it to be uncomfortable. I use it primarily on the track since my normal riding jacket is a Motorport Kevlar which has a built in back protector. If you are going with a fairly rigid one like the BMW, Icon, Dianese, or Sidi see if you can try it on to make sure that it is comfortable. A solid back protector will be hot in warm weather, the Motorport built in one is vented like the rest of their built in armor on the mesh jackets. Link to comment
Paul In Australia
hey guys "you only have one spine" and it is what allows you to continue to ride . Wear one all the time." best regards PCH Link to comment
bakerzdosen
If you go with one, try the Sidi. Did you mean Spidi by any chance? Google seemingly hadn't heard of a Sidi back protector either. Link to comment

motoguy128
I have a Bohn back protector back from when I used to do track days. It was reasonably comfortabel and pretty easy to take on/off. Probably a little hot on summer days. It was soft armour with some kevlar for puncture resistance, but it did cover the tailbone. Better worn under a 1 piece riding suit or leathers. Link to comment
elkroeger
I picked up a used Bohn for about 1/2 price. The thing is designed to attach to the inside of the roadcrafter, which makes it really convenient. It also has straps to wear like a backpack. It's probably a little heavier, larger and perhaps more protective than the aerostich units (but I'm just speculating). I don't really notice the thing while wearing the suit - either riding or walking. I was conerned that I would feel like a turtle... However, after I take the suit off, the whole thing is noticably heavier and bulkier. It's not a big deal to me, but if you intend to stow the suit inside saddle bags, etc. while away from the bike, it would be an issue. http://bohnarmor.com/catalog/proddetail.php?prod=KC16%2F17A Link to comment
Exploreinman
I agree, I wouldn't ride without a spine protector or a jacket that has a spine protector. A friend of mine recently went down in front of a railroad crossing in his Aerostitch suit at about 45 mph. He slid down the road and would have been fine except for hitting the raised track. He ended up braking some ribs and with a collapsed lung, but that back protector probably prevented much worse injuries, especially to his spine. Link to comment
Whip
I have one of these for Track Days. Link to comment
Joel
http://www.aerostich.com/catalog/US/Aerostich-Back-Pad-p-16486.html +1. ALWAYS in my jacket. So comfortable that I don't even know it is there. Haven't put it to a good test though (and don't really want to :smirk:). Link to comment
