Final drive question

Since getting my R11RS four years and 23K miles ago, the final drive has developed a rather sloppy feel and seems to have excessive slack. The bike is a 1994 model with a "rebuilt under warranty" tranny and approximately 65000 miles. With the bike on its center stand and in first gear there is real wheel movement of about 2 inches. I am measuring at the outer rim of the wheel. There is a "clunk" at each end of wheel's travel. Do I need to tear into the final drive just yet or not? I have not dealt with this issue before and I have two other shaft driven bikes, both older than the RS. I will appreciate any guidance or advice on this.

Thanks,

Lee

What kind of movement are you talking about? Rotational, Axial ect?

Grab you wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock and check for play in the vertical axis. Then do the same thing at 3 and 9 for horizontal. Also give the wheel a spin and repeat.

That is all normal - both the rotational movement and the clunk.

(so long as we are talking rotational and not lateral - but then the rear wheel would effectiely fallen off - so you knew that!).

About 2 inches of rotational movement is normal. The gear selection dogs have a fair amount of slop in them - without it you could not engage a gear. The clunk is when the dog reaches the end of the slop.

Stop worrying, get on the bike and ride it

Thanks to all who have helped with my question. I shall indeed "stop worrying and just ride". We are just getting into the "leather weather" with high 40's in the mornings it's time to hang up the mesh suit.

Best to ya'

Note that in 1st gear the apparent "slack" is more than in a gear closer to 5th gear.

Yes I agree, no problem just ride your bike
