Junkman3353 Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 I've been riding for 25 years and have yet to have a flat tire while riding. (I know-tempting the Gods! ) I have a flat repair kit that's almost 20 yrs old and all the tubes of gunk are dried up. What should I replace it with that is reasonably priced yet effective?
AZgman Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 The only thing to use in my opinion is the Stop & Go kit. http://www.stopngo.com/motorcycle.asp
stubblejumper Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 I had a flat two weeks ago and used a cheap kit like the one in the link.It may not be the best kit,but it got me to a dealer to have a new tire installed.I used a slime pump to inflate the tire. http://www.4x4abc.com/ML320/ml320_puncture.html
stubble! Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 After all I've heard and read on the subject, I choose to carry a string kit and a little compressor. Last week at K-Mart I found a motorcycle-specific compact plug kit for about ten bucks. The tools are just a bit shorter than full-size, the string plugs are individually wrapped, and it comes with a nice little nylon pouch, about 2x5". Perfect! Pretty sure it was "monkey grip" brand, but it looked just like this:
BeemerLover Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 I have the string kit too and a small compressor that cost $12 at Wal Mart. But I also include an assortment of flat head sheet metal screws and a screwdriver. Many years ago I saw a guy with a flat pull the nail out, lubricate a sheet metal screw with the goop that is used for the string and screw it into the hole. It gripped the internal belts and screwed in really tight. The tire held air really well. The head wore off quickly but the shank did not unscrew. Got him through the trip and to the dealer for a new tire! Gael
smiller Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 I would absolutely avoid any tire repair system that requires reaming/enlarging of the hole as that will almost certainly do more damage to the tire than the original puncture. Why wreck the tire in order to fix it? I swear by the Dynaplug system because it is easy on the tire but the Nealey also looks good in that respect.
Pennys Dad Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 +1 for the Stop n Go, I just added the cyclepump to the tire repair kit.
awagnon Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 I'm into over kill. I carry the small Stop-n-go kit as well as sticky ropes and glue. I prefer to plug with the Stop-n-go, but sometimes the ropes actually seal better. Neither takes up much space or weight, so I carry both.
Junkman3353 Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 Thanks for the advice, guys. It all helps a lot.
