Capt_Ron Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Recently, the servo-assisted ABS brakes on my wife's R1150RS would not engage. The only braking she had was what you would have with the engine off. The ABS light was flashing and I noticed that her brake light was on even though the brake lever and pedal were not engaged. I fiddled with the front brake lever to get the brake light to go off and the ABS brake system returned to normal function. The slightest pull on the front brake lever engages the switch. I need some help on how to go about adjusting the front brake lever brake switch so it isn't so sensitive (that is I need a little more play before the brake light is turned on). Thanks, Ron
brucejuice Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Capt, what switch is engaged, I assume the brake light switch. I want my brake light to come on as soon as I thinK about touching the brakes. I don't know how your wife's bike is set up but on my 1996 R1100 RT the switch has little to do with ABS engaging. I have found if my battery is low (not enough amps)that at start up my ABS will not engage. I don't know if this will help.
Boffin Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Brucejuice, if the brakelight is on, the ABS/Servo on the 1150 will not initialise and you have "residual" braking only. Ron, There is a known issue on these bikes of gunk building up under the rubber boot on the bars, preventing the lever returning fully. Check yours and if this is the problem, clean it out and go for a ride. Then check for brake fluid, which if present indicates the need for a master cylinder re-build. Andy
Capt_Ron Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 Andy, That's exactly what is happening...the ABS won't initialize and she's headed down the mountain with only residual braking. I diddled with the front brake lever enough to make the brake light go off, and as soon as that happens, everything returns to normal. I thought there might be an adjustment somewhere, but I will go check it now to see if its the gunk impeding full return as you suggested. Thanks for the relies all. Ron
