Headlight adjustment R12ST

When adjusting the headlight laterally, the knob marked 2 was turned until it fell off. Fortunately, the headlight is in proper alignment now. Nevertheless, the adjustment may have little future value, if something changes. In other words, I don't know why it needed adjustment in the first place.

The folks at the local BMW dealer don't know how this assembly is assembled, since the microfiche does not show any subassembly. The item is carried and sold as a complete unit.

The plastic knob appears to be somewhat knurled inside. The shaft in the headlight assembly appears to be smooth. It seems that the knob will press back onto the shaft. The knob probably comes off to prevent breaking the adjuster. It will apparently require removal of the headlight assembly from the motorcycle in order to be able to reach the shaft in a straight line. This requires that the fairing be removed.

I hope that reinstalling this knob does not require disassembling the entire headlight assembly in order to learn how this fits together.

Obviously, the headlight required more lateral adjustment than was designed.

I have the opening in the assembly taped in order to prevent anything from falling out.

Can anyone shed any light on how to reinstall the knob?

I had my light assembly out a few months ago. Unfortunately the photo you posted is about as stripped down as it goes before you have to deal with the seal between the front and back halves. I don't remember much about that particular area. I was focused on the internal wiring and a possible HID projector retrofit.

You might be able to see what you need after removing the bulb access covers.

There is no parts for that, it is only sold as a unit, you will have to replace the whole unit if you can't find a nut to epoxy on it.

I know because BMW replaced it on my Ex_GF's R1200ST.
