CraigC Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Although not exactly a ride tale, Judith and I, in celebration of our 17th wedding anniversary, spent two weeks in Italy this past May. After finally figuring out how to post pictures I wanted to take you on a little photo journey of Rome. Rome is one of the most beautiful and crowded cities in the world; however, the traffic and those Africanized scooters can be dangerous to your health...lane discipline is non-existent and a red light/stop sign doesn't always mean STOP! The art of parking in Rome! In spite of the crowds and the horror stories we heard about tourist scams we felt very safe to walk the streets and explore the typical tourist sites during our three day stay. There is a very strong law enforcement presence from both local and paramilitary (Carabinier) police. The Trevi Fountain...OK you can't really see this amazing water fountain, I only took pictures of bikes. They say if you throw a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain you will return to Rome. Oops sorry... you don't won't to see pictures of us. Cops on cycles... This is one cool dude, Judith was trying to get him to stop, hence the cold stare behind those shades. Um...I wonder what the distraction was with his partner? These series of pictures were taken near the Piazza di Spagna ( The Spanish Steps) in the early morning. The Piazza di Spagna (sorry no bike picture) Near the Pantheon (Greek for everything divine) Built in 25 BC as a temple for the Roman gods. Why doesn't BMW import these? Near the Vatican... Lastly, when in Rome, do as the Romans do:
Twisties Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Nice! We were pretty amazed with the scooters, the driving, the bike parking, and the police bikes too. Took many similar pics. We found Italy incredibly beautiful, and very picturesque. However, although people were nice to us, by our second week the rigors of travel were starting to outweigh the scenery and novelty. If we ever go back to the EU, it will be a bike tour. Most likely only will do it if the exchange rate ever gets more favorable. Did you get to Villa Borghese? That was our favorite thing in Rome. Jan
Francois_Dumas Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Great bike pictures, oh, and , errmm, some nice city pictures too Glad you enjoyed 'the old town' down south. Jan, tear down the New York stock exchange, and the exchange rate will get better..... THEN you give us a call
eddd Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Nice pictures. Too many people for me, but I guess that is my loss.
azkaisr Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 I am still bitter I wasn't invited along. But it looked glorious! Tom
CraigC Posted July 20, 2008 Author Posted July 20, 2008 Did you get to Villa Borghese? That was our favorite thing in Rome. Jan We did, a magnificent park, but we didn't have time to visit the museums. What we liked most was sitting outdoors at one of the sidewalk cafes, especially at the Piazza Navano. I forget to post my favorite bike picture:
Francois_Dumas Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 One thing similar between Rome and Dutch cities is riding the cobble stones and brick roads....
