An Un-Believably Good Time ( MANY pictures) Part-I

My ride tale is more of a collection of various events than anything else. I really didn’t take that many pictures while in John Day. I guess I was too busy enjoying the company. Anyway, hear are some of my pictures before, during, and after my first Un.

I left the house on the 4th with 2,662 miles to travel to get to John Day. I was wondering if the rain 20 miles into the ride was a sign. Luckily, it wasn’t.

Since I have to travel a long way to get anywhere, and I often head in the same direction (Torrey, Ouray, Ruidoso, Big Bend). I decided that on Day 1 I would just pound out 900 miles on the interstate and get to some good riding on Day 2, which brought me to New Mexico 152 and a twisty ride into Silver City, New Mexico through the Gila National Forest.

Just before you enter Silver City you come across the very impressive Santa Rita Copper Mine.

orig.jpg

It is hard to capture the scale of this place, but these two shots might help. In the first one you get the big picture, at least as big as my camera would allow, which still left much of the mine out of the frame.

orig.jpg

This picture zeros in on one part of the previous picture and an excavator of enormous size, that just looks ridiculously small when compared to the enormity of the mine itself.

orig.jpg

North of Silver City I came across an old bridge buried in the trees. I decided to get a few shots and was reward for my efforts.

orig.jpg

Sometimes you have to ignore the signs.

orig.jpg

My reward for trespassing.

orig.jpg

I looked for the bridge’s plaque, but someone had removed it.

orig.jpg

There was some valuable information posted next to the no trespassing sign.

orig.jpg

The new bridge just doesn’t have the character of its predecessor.

orig.jpg

And the people who cross it are unaware of the treasure that was right beneath them.

orig.jpg

While on the bridge I enjoyed this view to the east.

orig.jpg

But the real treat was to the west and directly under the new bridge.

orig.jpg

As I enjoyed the view and serenity of the area under the new bridge, I was treated to a group of about a dozen javalinas slowly crossing the water.

I got back on the RT very glad I had taken the time to stop and investigate.

orig.jpg

Day 2 ending in Blanding, Utah. And Day 3 began with a glorious ride down UT 95.

orig.jpg

I rode 55 miles before meeting another vehicle.

orig.jpg

I slipped into Torrey for gas and some bakery and then headed south on UT 12. I crossed the dry Paria River at Cannonville and headed for Tropic.

orig.jpg

On the road to Tropic I saw something that made me turn around, head back to river, take some pictures, and wait.

You can just make out a dark line coming down the river bed.

The next series of pictures are self explanatory.

My return and patience had been rewarded. This was definitely something you don’t get to see every day.

One of the first riders I met at John Day turned out to be someone that wasn’t with the group, but had a fascinating tale to tell. He was an emergency services dispatcher from the Isle of Man and had his bike shipped over to New York. After 6 days in Customs he finally got to start his adventure. He had already ridden from New York to Seattle and was now on his way back. I didn't have my camera with me when I was talking to him, and he was off early the next morning.

His license plate had been stolen on the first day, so he made his own.

Great photos. I have a tendency to just blast through places and it's obvious I miss the life and beauty you've captured here.

Thanks for posting

How come when I

his Ride Tale I get all the pix, but when I try to view them in the thread I don't get past Ken's dirty bike???

I get a blank screen.

Yes, right after the crack about Ken's dirt adventure the pictures go away. Rather suspicious.

I am seeing the same problem BTW.

I get the full post without any problems. Anyone else getting cut off? There are about 30 pictures after Ken's dirty bike.

Likewise here. I even loaded it twice just to be sure. About the river, was it a flash-flood like episode, or was a spillway opened on a dam somewhere? Good thing you weren't getting a beauthy shot with the bike in the middle of the seemingly dry river bed.

It was a flash flood. There was rain up in the surrounding hills.

Thanks for taking the time to wait for the pigs and roaring water to arrive. My patience would have been tested, or if I had stopped I would have fallen asleep.

Same problem as the others - although I am 10.000 miles further away - no piccies after Ken's GS :/

What made you turn around to catch the river filling ??????

I really like the VERY FIRST picture..... very 'moody' !

I've posted the rest of the pictures in a separate post in Ride Tales for anyone who can't get the full original post. Please check here .

As for the river, as I rode up the road toward where it was raining, I got lucky and glanced over at the river and caught sight of the leading edge of the flash flood. I hoped I'd have time to get back and catch it back by the bridge.

I guess I better cut a long post into two parts next time.

It works for me

Worthy Tale amigo! My favorite picture is the first one. Catching a Flash Flood is also very glorious

Really enjoyed the flash flood sequence and especially the schoolhouse pictures. That was like going back in time and glimpsing a world that really has ceased to exist.

Amazing Pictures. Seeing the river bed really come alive must of been incredible in person.!

The flash flood pics were almost surreal. Great shots.

That was just great Ed. When looking at the flash flood shots I found that by scrolling the wheel on my mouse from one picture to the next really quickly it was just like watching the real thing.
