Great aftermarket tankbag for '05 R1200RT

I just found a great aftermarket tankbag for my 2005 R1200RT, the TourMaster (Cortech) Super Mini Strap Mount. It is compact, low profile, lets you still view the GPS clearly, and easily snaps off for storage in the side case.

I also have the OEM BMW Tank bag that snaps into the tank rails, but I find it too tall, blocks my GPS. And it is not very user friendly, and it is hard to fit into the side case.

That appears to be just what I've been looking for. thumbsup.gif

I'd really like to see how the tankbag straps attach to the rails of the R1200RT, though. Are any modifications required for RT mounting? What would be the best way to protect the bike's finish from being marred by the backside of the tankbag?

Mines not attached to the rails. The front straps I ran around the steering neck and the rear I ran down and around the bar on the seat adjuster. The bag sits on the rails so it doesn't contact the paint.

IMHO, the BigMak tank bag is the only way to go on any of the RTs. I used the same setup from my 1150RT on the new 1200RT and it is really great. Why??

No straps and nothing to touch your paint. Easy flip up to fuel the bike to. I have my GPS above the dash on the Motorrad Concept mount so it is easy to see without looking down and taking yer eyes off the road. Big Mak will not interfere with GPS even when flipped up. Only downside is the higher cost.... but you get what ya pay for!!

I suppose if your GPS is mounted low on the steering/bar mount the Big Mak would be a problem.... but I don't understand why you would mount yer GPS so low down and hard to see

Anyhow, worth a look before you order a bag with straps etc.

Different bags for different needs. For my particular needs (cell phone, wallet, garage door opener, checkbook, sunglasses, pen), the small tankbag will suit me just fine.

I don't like the way the Big mack sit up off the tank as far as looks are concerned. Also with a GPS mounted between the bars the BM is useless as it can't be flipped forward. The rails on the new RT prevent the bags from contacting the paint but I never worried about that anyway. I figure the way I ride with the lack of cosmetic maintenance mine is going to get scratched up one way or another grin.gif.

Catbird the mini will allow you room for all of those and still have enough room for a decent sized camera.

(As I said, above) I placed my online order this AM. New England M/C Emporium called me this PM and advised me that they are out of stock and a backorder requiring 10 days or so would be required till they get more in. SHUCKS!!! frown.gif

You may check here to see if it is in stock or do a search. My local dealer even stocks one.

Satguy, I guess it's mater of personal preference. I tried running with a shelf and didn't like having stuff up above the gauges. I ran a BM bag on and 1150RT and it worked great but I had my gadgets on reservoir mounts.

I like the look and size of this TourMaster mini bag, but it is not clear to me how one would mount it on the tankbag rails on the R12RT. Is it a hassle to take off and put back on?

Jon it doesn't mount to the rails (at least mine doesn't). I ran the front strap around the steering neck and the rear strap around the bar for the seat adjuster. I cut the excess off of the rear strap. Click all the straps in place pull the slack out of the rear strap and it's done. You have to leave a bit of slack in the rear strap until you put your seat back on then pull the slack out. It takes about 10 minutes for initial installation and about 10 seconds to remove the bag after that. It sits on the rails so you get no paint contact. To remove it you just unhook the three straps and its off. For refueling I just unhook the rear buckle swing my handle bars to the left and let the bag hang buy the front straps on the right side unless your a left fillerwink.gif then do the opposite. It's not as neat and cool as the BMW set up, which is a great set up but I found the bag to large for me. I just don't like or need a huge tank bag. and for $50.00 the mini is a great alternative thumbsup.gif The only real complaint I have about it is the map pouch is too small but I suppose buying a small bag is gonna get you a small pouch.

Thanks. That is helpful information. I also don't need a big tankbag. On my old K11LT, I had generous storage pockets in the fairing, and I miss those. The empty radio compartment on the R12RT is a knuckle scraper and it's really skimpy. I just need a handy place for odds and ends, such as cell phone, camera, ear plugs, peanuts, etc. I don't often use the saddle bags and prefer to leave them stored away until I make longer trips.
