Germany in June

Julie and I went to Germany in June, getting back home a week before we headed to California and then the Unrally.

We flew into Munich and rented a pair of F800ST's.

Then we proceeded to ride 1980 miles by first heading south from Munich into the Alps, then to the Black Forest, Mosel Valley, Rhine Valley, and back to Munich via the Romantic Road. Here are our motorcycle tracks (the orange lines) from our GPS.

We saw lots of castles, like Nueschwanstein:

and Hohenschwangau:

and Burg Eltz:

We also stayed in a couple of castles overnight. Here we are at dinner in the dining room of the Castle Liebenstein

overlooking the Rhine River.

We also got to eat adult lunches (at least one of us did):

I'll try to add more of the story and pictures later. It really was a great trip!

Those are awesome pics. I love the castle pics.

Wow, so different from Italy (our only European foray). Those are incredible fairytale castles you've got there, those are. And huge.

Looking forward to more when you get a chance.

Ditto, waiting for more. :lurk:

How did the F800's compare to your K bikes?

The F800's were really well suited to most of the roads we were on. They were smooth, light and had plenty of power in the tight twisties of the Black Forest and the hills around the Mosel Valley. The Autobahn wasn't their forte, but it wasn't mine either. I'm not looking to trade out of our K1200S's, but I also wouldn't hesitate to rent F800's again for twisty roads. The Alps and the Pyrenees come to mind.

Well phooey! We'll just have to come back again, and we will call you for sure.

Thanks,

OK, I'll try some more pictures.

Here is another one of Neuschwanstein as seen from the neighboring castle Hohenschwangau.

This is the famous Toi Toi Throne Room, quite functional.

On to some motorcycle pictures:

I don't understand much German, but the nice policemen put up signs like this one to let you know that this is a very nice motorcycle road.

We found a gathering of exotic sport bikes at a roadside cafe after one of these really neat roads.

Then there is the famous Nurburgring racing complex.

They were having motorcyle races on the GP course the Sunday we were there. Here are turns 1 and 2 which follow the Start/Finish straightway.

And the infamous Nordscliefe (North Course) where anyone can pay a toll to ride around the 13 mile course as fast as you please. And everyone else is going as fast as they please.

We also tried other modes of transportation, like this quaint (read that as "tiny") ferry that took us across the Mosel River to the village of Bielstein where we stayed for two nights.

This is wine country at its finest and I took the opportunity to have a custom wine tasting one evening, but that is a story for another time.

Hope you enjoyed these.
