E30TECH Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I decided to install one of these on the front of my RT as the rubber stem was a PITFA to get to with the rotors in the way. It took little more time than I had anticipated. I saw JimVonBaden used one of these on his bike with good results. After looking at my rim, and comparing it to Jim's, I noticed that bead that goes down the middle of the rim was not the same. I had to modify mine differently. This took me a few hours as I had to test fit it, then check for leaks. I had to reset the bead about 5 times to get it right. Once I got everything completed, I let the wheel sit overnight at a set pressure. I checked it the next day and it was good. I rode it enough to get the tire hot, brought it home and checked for bubbles with soapy water. All was good. It has been tested up to 115 with no issues The wheel balanced perfectly with .75 oz Now I will check my front tire pressure more often.
Crackenback Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Last month I noticed that both my tires were low on air. I hadn't ridden the bike much lately and when I went to add air I noticed that both valve stems were dry-rotted (they are the originals from 2002). The one on the front actually came apart when I tried to fill it. So off I go to the auto parts store and long story short, automotive tire valve stems generally come in two sizes. And wouldn't you know it, BMW uses one that is between the two. The larger of the two sizes didn't want to go in (and I really didn't want to force it) so I put in the smaller of the two sizes. So now I have a tire that leaks air. I was thinking of putting one of the metal style valve stems in but I had noticed that little ridge on the rim and was worried about it leaking. I guess now I might just do it. So my question is, where did you source those? I really like the idea of them being on an angle making them easier to check and fill if needed. Thanks.
E30TECH Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 I got them from www.motorcycleanchor.com Modifying it was a PITA. I used a dremel with a renforced cut off wheel, and finished up using a rubber wheel. If you need help, let me know. BTW, here is another shot you may want for reference
smiller Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 You can also try Patchboy. The items below are for straight and curved stems and are a fraction of the price of other options. I know they fit 1100 cast wheels with no mods (because I have a pair installed) and I think the 1150 are the same. http://patchboy.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=P&Product_Code=17-560 http://patchboy.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=P&Product_Code=17-561&Category_Code=6-3
jfixit Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Isn't it funny how we motorcyclists will spend several hours modifying something to save a few seconds of inconvienence per week. Nice job.

Yeah I seem to do stuff like that all the time. Keeps me out of trouble I guess. Thanks. I sent pics to the manufacturer so he can post them on his page - hopefully it will help others.
ESokoloff Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Odd that you had to modify your valve. I put this valve on an 03 RT & 03 GT with no need of modification. The raised rib on the rim is relived around the valve location on my rims whereas that appears not the case on your rim???? Note: This valve works for the front rim only. (5 spoke rims of this generation... 03 +- ). In order to POSSIBLY work on the rear, modification would be necessary. I found that access to the rear valve is Ok with the stock (style) valve anyway so no need to change style.
Fugu Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 It has been tested up to 115 with no issues I'm surprised your tire held 115psi.
E30TECH Posted July 20, 2008 Author Posted July 20, 2008 Does your rim have the 'bead' in the same spot as mine? Fugu: I didn't put a measurement preceding the 115 as i did not want to implicate myself
