Vents?

On my 2004 RT, what are the vents for in the top of the fairing, under the mirrors? They seem perfectly useless. There doesn't seem to be any air coming out of them.

Yes, they are useless....the earlier models had hot air ventage from them. The laters models don't.

Interesting, my 97 RT has movable flaps to direct hot air from the radiator to either those vents or a lower set, ostensibly so you can get some heat on your hands. Since its 100deg every day I ride, I can tell any difference either way.

So, they abandoned the concept?

Yes, when it was cold enough to need them, there was not enough heat in the air coming off the cooler. When the air coming off the cooler was hot enough, it was too hot to need it.

Yup...

in the winter you can't tell if they were working or not, but if you accidently ever left the vents open in the summer they would cook your hands in no time.

Which of course is always a wonderful practical joke with your buddies on a 90+ degree day. Wait till their not looking, then flip open the vents and flip the grips on high.

I removed those stupid air ducts, so I could install a speaker enclosure for each of the fronts. Sounds way better that the open air factory design.

Actually, these vents are for high pressure air bypass. At certain speeds, a wave front develops at the front ('leading edge') of the fairing which causes excess drag, and undesired front tire loading. By allowing this high pressure air to escape through these vents, the drag is reduced. Also, because of the shape of the tunnel through the fairing, while straight line stability is improved the ability of the bike to change directions quickly is unaffected. The original iteration of this design concept included small thrust vectoring vanes, which were proven to be unnecessary except at extreme speeds, and were deleted from the newer models.
