SinNH Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 that with as lean as the R1100 runs,(no fuel controller) and as clean as the plugs are after a 5000 rpm plug check or a plug check after a regular ride back in the shop that the outlet is black. Not sooted, just a fine layer of black. I use a quart of engine oil about every 2000, regardless if it's Rotella, Mobil 1,BMW dino, or etc. My K1100 and the R100 which run richer have cleaner exhaust outlets. I've gotten the R1100 to run just about as perfect as I can with many fastidious valve adj,0=0,and TB balances. I don't baby it. Any clues? Why does this bother me Steve
philbytx Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Have the same thing with both my 1150RT and my 1100R. Both run great, so I don;t worry. Oh! and the exhausts clean up really well with Bartenders Friend
ShovelStrokeEd Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 The ends of the muffler are a really poor indicator of rich/lean condition. The exhaust gases and their associated funk (hydrocarbons, water, oxides of nitrogen) have had more than adequate time to cool and leave a coating of sludge. Plug checks that are not done using the chop method are equally inaccurate. Clean up the spooge and quit worrying.
