TyTass Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 OK. I'm tired of this. I've had my '04 1150RT for 19 months and it now only has 21K miles on it. It's been eating oil. My service tech has said twice now that he can find no leaks except the oil filler cap (which I was aware of that leak but assumed there must have been something else due to the amount). Anyway, I've gone thru 2 caps of the stock plastic (pieces of crap they are) now. This last one fit so badly my pants were oily at the end of a 2 day ride. Needless to say ... I'm tired of worrying about oil levels and wondering if there's something wrong with the filler opening (more than likely a ridiculous thought). So, I'm looking for a better fitting cap. Any recomendations?
Boffin Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 The usual place for a leak here is the o-ring under the inner plastic insert. I swap out both o-rings every oil change - they nned it. There is an after-market filler cap out there somewhere - I'll do a search to see what pops out. Andy
BFish Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 are you certain it's the cap leaking or is the motor just thirsty? FYI-my 2004 RT has 40k miles on it now, but didn't stop using oil until about 15k. switched to syn at that time.
Boffin Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 OK - Moto techniques makes a "leak-proof2 cap - here's an old thread on it. Now to google moto-thechniques... Andy
Edgar Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Are you putting the oil cap on backward? The stock oil cap is asymmetrical with the high point in the ridges pointing toward the rear. You have to look closely at the cap to see the different orientation, but if 2 different caps are leaking it's probably not the cap.
Deadboy Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Change both o-rings, not just the one on the cap....underneath the cap there is a 2nd one (you have to pry out the plastic part the cap locks into to see it)....I had one go bad and it covered my leg in no time, now I carry a spare....

So, I'm looking for a better fitting cap. Any recomendations? You could pop off the O ring that fits on the underside of the cover and get the next cross section size larger. So, I believe the inside diameter is 17mm and the cross section is 5.33 that will give you an O ring which is an imperial BS313 nitrile. You could approach you nearest O ring suplier and he could get you a Metric 17mm ID x 5.5MM CS nitrile. That tiny bit more cross section may just close up the gap. If you take the cap into the O ring vendor, if he is any good he will be able to give you the exact cross section and advise on which is the next alternative. Don't try to go too large or you will have real problems getting the cap on, and will probably shear off the pins. Andy

As for consumption, Stuart at Morton's told me it is somewhat typical for the bike to be "thirsty" I think he said until the 16k-20k neighborhood.
TyTass Posted July 21, 2008 Author Posted July 21, 2008 Sorry ... been out riding. Thanks All. Yes, did note some time ago the cap is asymetrical. But I doubt if both o-rings were changed last time. So, I'll change both. A spare does indeed sound like a great idea! I may still buy the aftermarket plug, too. Thanks again everyone.
AnRSguy Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Be sure that everytime you remove the cap to clean and dry the O ring on the cap. Mine used to leak until I started wiping the oil off. It hasn't leaked since. YMMV.
outpost22 Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 There is a guy over at IBMW (I think) that sells nitrile o-rings for the oilheads. I put a set on the RT for the oil filler and cam chain covers and haven't had a leak since. Can't seem to find the link though
