TGarner Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I am going on a cross coutnry trip and was recommended to use the Metzeler ME880 tires on my R1100RS due to the extended mileage I can get on the tires. I have only used Michelin Pilot Road's in the past. I know I will give up some traction. Does anyone have any experience with the Metzeler's.
Tony_K Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Don't know what kind of milage you're getting on PR'S but I know I can cross the country 2+ times back and forth on a set. Why switch?
TGarner Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 I tend to get about 5-6k miles on the rear. I am actually planning on riding for the month of Sept. all around the country.
jfixit Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Changed front ME880 on my 03 RT last night, 13,500 miles and still had a thousand or two left but will be traveling and wanted fresh tire. I have about 12,000 on the rear ME880 and will run that one on the trip before I change it, still has a couple thousand in it.
keithb Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 I just put a set of ME880's on my 05 RT. If you are not used to them, which I was not, the carcass initially feels very stiff. The pressures I had in them on my 200 mile break in ride was too much (40/R, 42/R). It felt like the tires were heavy and the front end was bouncing quite a bit. I lowered the pressure in the front tire to 38 lbs. 42/R and it made a big difference. The bike did not feel heavy and the front was no longer bouncing. Last weekend I went for an 800 mile round trip ride up to Sequoia Nat. Park and I enjoyed the ride much better. The bike felt much more stable with the lower pressure in the front tire.

I'm running the rear ME880 on my 07 RT at 40lbs.
keithb Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Dave I may try 40 lbs. in the rear. I left the rear at 42 lbs. for my trip considering I had about 40 lbs. of camping gear on the bike.
