upflying Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 In preparation for painting my Tupperware, I'd like to remove the kneepads. Has anyone ever done this? I don't see any obvious hardware for attachment so I assume the pads are glued on. If I pull the pad off, does it destroy the pad or can it be reused? From what I can see the glue seems to have a ferocious bond.
Boffin Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 This is a good use for cheesewire, or a strong monifilament fishing line. Warm the area with a hairdryer, then lift one corner, slip the fishing line under and with a helper keeping the heat on (perhaps one of those lamps in the 1950's cop shows) gently "saw" the pad off. Andy If that's actually Bob pictured in his avatar, I'm sure he already has the "3rd degree" model desk lamp. Loved that show as a kid. 10-4, 10-4.
WaywardSon Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Don't have any trouble getting mine off...hell, they fly off going down the road. The question is, how do you get them to stay on once they have been off? My BMW dealer put mine back on with a 3M double-sided tape (red). Did not make it the 70 miles back to the house. This is not intended as a hijack...he will get them off. Getting them back on to stay may end up being more of a problem. I have often thought that if I were to have mine painted, I would have a good body man fill that area in & just paint the whole thing.
Jerry Johnston Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Got mine off when I repainted the bike by heating and slowly peeling. Had a devil of a time getting them reattached until I cleaned up the surface to make sure there wasn't any wax (alcohol) and then glued them back on with a molding cement.
WaywardSon Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Tell me more about molding cement. Not familiar with that.
realshelby Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 The secret to using double sided tape is "Adhesion Promotor". It is a 3M product. When used on the painted parts of the tupperware, or other smooth surface it holds significantly better than without it. The knee pad needs to be cleaned very well for the tape to stick properly. Or, the cheap way to attach them is to use 3M (yes, I like 3M products) Weatherstrip adhesive. Use black, the yellow will look like crap!
Jerry Johnston Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Go to any auto supplier and they'll have more than one brand used to stick molding on your car.
rahbert Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 Thanks for asking as I just unboxed the panels I purchased on ebay; beautiful RT-P panels in Alpine White except that some genius pulled off the rubber knee and foot pads, which AFAIK cannot be sourced from BMW. They also pulled off the glove box lid, a $204 part from BMW. Painting another one will be a PITA. Why do people do this?
oldironhead Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 I would bet that gorilla snot would hold those suckers on.
AndyS Posted August 14, 2011 Posted August 14, 2011 This is a good use for cheesewire, ......Warm the area with a hairdryer, Andy Or even dental floss acting as a cheesewire. Andy
