BMWrench Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Just hooked up a new stereo. I'm disappointed in the sound due to the wind noise with the stock windshield. Can't hear anything over 35mph. Planning on getting a Cee Bailey's wind shield and wondering which model/height to get. I am 6'1" tall. Seems the #2 is the most popular, but should I get the std. or the Euro Cut? Have any of you experienced any problem with the flip at the top of the #2? If I do cut down on the noise problem will I then have a huge back pressure issue?
Ken H. Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 A CB +2 would be fine for 6'1". Standard or Euro cut is mostly a matter of style preference. But don't expect it to quite the bike to the point you can hear a in-dash stereo at speed. It's not that kind of a bike. Besides, you're destroying your hearing in the process. Everyone should be riding with ear plugs. Consider in-helmet speakers, or better yet, in-ear noise blocking monitors.
STICKMAN Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 The Cee Bailey plus 2 is good and the Euro cut will deflect the wind noise a little bit more. I have that set up and I can hear the radio of speeds up to 85 mph. I have been riding for over 40 years and my hearing is fine. That is 20 plus years of riding everyday with both the radio with an external speaker and later with speakers in the helmet. The idea of ear plugs is nice, but I prefer hearing the surrounding sounds for any possible harzards that might be near by, plus it depends on the laws in your state. While riding the RT at highway speed the volume level is around 23 on the viewing display. You can always go to helmet speakers later, should you not like the audio.
AndyS Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Just hooked up a new stereo. I'm disappointed in the sound due to the wind noise with the stock windshield. Can't hear anything over 35mph. Why not just get a set of helmet speakers? the quality will be better and you won't annoy others around you anywhere near as much. You can then keep the bike looking pretty with a lower profile screen and hey prest! everyone wins... ...except the guys that want to flog you a screen that will still not tick ALL the boxes. Andy.
BMWrench Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 I have to agree with Stickman, I like to be able to hear what’s going on around me while riding. Bin riding without helmets or earplugs for almost 30 years. Still hear fine. I am also interested in the improved weather protection of a larger shield. Just found out there is a dealer in my area that will allow me to try the Cee Bailey's windshield before I buy it. Does anyone have any suggestions for a better set of speakers that will work in a 2002 1150RT? The stock speakers are really lacking in the low end.

Bin riding without helmets or earplugs for almost 30 years. Still hear fine. I am not talking about ear plugs, I mean autocom style 'in helmet speakers'. These don't stop external noises from being heard, so you still have all the relevant senses you had before; but just maintain a much higher quality of sound and less intrusion into the surrounding population. Andy
BMWrench Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 Thanks AndyS. I'll check into the Autocom system, but I typically don't listen to the stereo where surrounding population would be affected. Also it's hard to mount a helmet system if you aren't using a helmet. Mostly back country and freeway riding. I do however appreciate your response.
Tominator Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 ZTechnik , Cee Baileys are a good second. But too thin of a material (IMHO). Stay away from Aeroflow. I call them aerocrack. My ZTechnik is so good I can use my phone with the windscreen all the way up...not that I do :-) Tomas
BMWrench Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 Anyone want to chime in with comments on Clear View windshields? I see they even offer a model with an adjustable vent built in. http://clearviewshields.com/shop/product.php?id=18

I come from a land where we are led to believe riding without a helmet will make the world explode - or at least that's what I was told ;-} Cheers Andy

BMWrench Posted July 19, 2008 Author Posted July 19, 2008 Thanks Tazplas, I was afraid this thread was going to turn into a helmet thread. I like what I've seen on the Cee Bailey stuff, but now that I've seen the Clearview site I am curious as to how well their vent will work to help with back pressure and cooling issues. I know someone who has a Clearview on his bike and likes it very much. He said it is indeed very clear and well made. But his is not on a BMW and doesn't have the vent in it. Any one out there had a Clearview with a vent on an RT?
Boffin Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 I was afraid this thread was going to turn into a helmet thread. It won't - I'm watching Andy
