David Joslin Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Thanks for being such a great resource. I have done valve adjusts before, but was jammed for time, so I took my 99 r11rt to a local MC shop. After a $480 36k service, the bike barely ran. Totally botched the sync. That and he missed a blown fork seal. He offered for me to bring it back, but frankly, I don't want him touching anything. I got the parts for both fork seals. Info found here. I spent Sunday afternoon doing both for seals and a sync (info found here as well). Once complete, my bike runs the best it EVER has in the 4 years and 24k miles I have put on it. Idles with no shake whatsoever. Pulls smoothly and is much quieter than before. Has me re-thinking my desire for a new bike. Anyway, thanks for the great resource, and if you are waffling on doing service yourself, I say go for it. David
KMG_365 Posted July 19, 2008 Posted July 19, 2008 Nice! Yes, the only way we can afford to own and ride these bikes is being able to do our own servicing . . . and almost all of what I've learned about the Oilhead was gleaned here from this wonderful "Collective". Glad to see it's still paying dividends to others as well! I spoke with someone at the last UnRally who said something similar--thought the bike was crap. Bought it used, it already had a Techlusion installed but it still ran like crap. He pulled the TechIllusion out and gave it a "proper" tune up and synch and it's a totally different bike! Until they're set right, they can be pretty finicky, but a well tuned Oilhead is a true pleasure.
Huzband Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 ...a well tuned Oilhead is a true pleasure. Oh, the places we could go with that.
