FuzzyRider Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 I have a 2000 R1100RTP with about 80000 miles on it. About 2 weeks ago it just stopped as I was riding home from work. It would not restart. The next day it started and ran fine. I ordered a new fuel filter and a new Hall sensor and took it to the local bike shop (not a BMW dealer and unfamiliar with BMWs) to install these parts. After the work was done, while they were testing it, they found that it would idle for a few minutes and then shut off. It would either restart or not. In either case, they say that it appears to be dragging on the starter when they attempt to restart, though the battery is strong. Fuel pressure appears to be good. Can some of you wrenchers suggest a game plan for finding out the problem. Any and all help appreciated.
ShovelStrokeEd Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 Rebuild the starter. New brushes, clean commutator, dismantle and clean/lube the Bendix drive. Examine all pertinent wiring to include battery connections, battery to starter cable, maybe starter and load shed relays. Battery condition could play a part here as well, have the battery load tested. Add to this an ignition timing check, when replacing the Hall sensors, it is entirely possible to get this off a few degrees.
4wheeldog Posted July 16, 2008 Posted July 16, 2008 When you turn on the key when it fails to start, can you hear the fuel pump run? If you can catch the fuel pump failing to pressure up when the key is turned to on, that is where you need to look. It could be a relay, connection or the pump itself. Otherwise, you can remove a plug wire, put a spare plug in it, ground the plug and check for spark when cranking. If you hear the pump, but there is no spark, it might be a coil or bad spark plug wires. Intermittent problems are the worst, since it can be difficult to get the problem to cooperate. Good Luck!

Wiggle all the wires from the ignition switch back along the frame. Look for any cable ties that might be too tight. If you find a wire that causes it to quit, you've found your problem. Remove your starter and disassemble. These Valeo starters have a habit of losing their field magnets. They are glued to the starter case and 'can' come loose. When they do, they cause a severe drag on the starter motor armature. Mick
GrumpyOldMan Posted July 17, 2008 Posted July 17, 2008 Calvin, In addition to the great suggestions you already received...... From personal experience with my RT-P, an intermittent side stand switch would cause a shutdown (and no crank condition) if the bike is in gear. Sounds like yours dies when in neutral as well, which would seem to rule out the side stand switch as the problem. If you also have a lazy neutral switch, an intermittent side stand switch could cause an engine shutdown while in neutral as well. In any case, I would jumper out the side stand switch to rule it out as a contributor to your problem. Good luck!
