AdirondackJack Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Although I've been motorcycling and touring for decades, this is my first run at owning a beemer, specifically an R1200RT. I am reasonably adept with a wrench and troubleshooting mechanical issues. My question for anyone who would be kind enough to shed some light here is: Given the seemingly rigid environment of the BMW Warranty, how much do-it-yourself servicing (like the 600 mile service and beyond) is realistic for an amateur like myself to undertake without voiding the warranty? I'm willing to take pictures to document my work, and feel that saving receipts is always a good idea. I am a tool freak, so don't mind assembling whatever exotic items are necessary (within reason), but is there test equipment (like for the computer on my bike) that it is impossible for me to duplicate at home? Perhaps there is a thread where this was previously discussed that spmeone can direct me to, so I don't waste everyone's valuable forum time here? What do you think??????????
Boffin Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Whereabouts in the world are you? The rules and laws on warranties vary considerably. In the USA warranty can only be voided if BMW can prove that the work you did caused the failure. In the UK, they can void the warranty if you do not have all servicing carried out by a BMW approved dealer. FWIW, many people have the 600 mile service done by the dealer then do the rest themselves. Much of the functionality of the BMW computer is available with a tool called the GS-911 ANdy
AdirondackJack Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 Although I have traveled by motorcycle through your homeworld, I currently reside on the U.S. side of the pond-thanks for asking, since it evidently makes a big difference (warranty-wise). And, yes, I was intending to have the dealer just do the first service, and then take over the bike's servicing myself. I assume that you agree with the photo, receipts, and good written documentation as I go is a prudent approach? Thanks for your input, and I'll check out the GS-911.
Albert Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I had the dealer do the 600 mile and I've done the rest myself. I did have it back to them to flush the 2 brake circuits and change fluid. I just didn't feel like dealing with that.
AdirondackJack Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 Any comment on the documentation question? Also, what did they charge for the first service?
Firefight911 Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 I always have the first service done by the dealer. After that, I do it in my own garage. As for documentation, keep a log book that shows the date, what you did, and keep any receipts for any supplies used. It would be against the law to deny a warranty claim just because you did your own maintenance.
AdirondackJack Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 Thanks. All the responses included here are good information. Looks as if the GS-911 tool is only available from one source in California. Has anyone bought and used this tool effectively, and has it helped them?
Firefight911 Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Here's a link that has all the information as well as a resellers tab. LINKY
