awagnon Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 A gentleman riding through this area on his way to California broke down and called for help. His 1100RT just spit out the left spark plug. There are no threads left in the head. Can this be fixed with a threaded insert or should he try to find a used head? Naturally it happened on a Monday when the shops are closed.
Boffin Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Most vehicle repair shops carry threaded inserts to repair stripped plug threads. It is quite a common failure due to the tendency of amateur wrenches to over-tighten spark plugs. Andy
Davis Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Get the time-sert inserts, which are much better than the helicoil inserts that most parts places will stock.
Eckhard Grohe Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Is there enough space between the valve seats for a Time-Sert. Helicoils are a smaller package and may be a better fit here and can be changed to a Time-Sert if there is concern.
awagnon Posted July 16, 2008 Author Posted July 16, 2008 A follow-up note: The shop inserted a threaded insert, but I don't know what brand and the guy was on his way by noon. Didn't even have to pull the head to insert it. They pressurized the cylinder with compressed air so all the chips were blow outwards as they cut the new threads. Said it should out last the engine.
