Traveler Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 My sight glass is toast. New one on order. However, I WOULD like to ride the bike. So, other than just measuring how much oil I put in, is there an alternate way to determine oil level?
russell_bynum Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 If you put the correct amount of oil in, and there's no oil on the floor under the bike after it's been parked, and there's no clouds of smoke out of the exhaust when you ride it, don't worry about it.
snod Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Go to most any auto parts store and buy a frost plug repair "kit". It is a rubber plug that expands as you tighten it. I don't know the correct size, but have seen this done along side the road. The only problem is that you can't see how much oil is in there. OK for a few hundred miles, at least.
smiller Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Measuring how much oil you put in should be fine (maybe use about 1/4 or 1/2 quart less than BMW's spec to be sure that you don't overfill.)
DavidEBSmith Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 When the oil light comes on you got trouble :-) You laugh, but there's an oil change place right down the street from Chicago BMW whose sign has lately read something like "Oil light on? See us." As if you're going to be getting too far beyond the oil change place with that oil light on . . .
Tominator Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Old School scare tactics! Oil Light On LMAO! Oil Light on? Good Enough to Poop On! Even for Triumph the Insult Dog! Tomas
