Deek Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I know there are adapters to use a male cigarette plug in a female BMW Powerlet socket. However, I'd like to install a Powerlet male plug onto the power cord on my Roady's power cable to make the installation a little neater. In other words, I'd like to cut off the male cigarette plug and substitute a Powerlet male plug. I think it would look a lot better and cost less than using a Powerlet-to-cigarette adaptor. The Powerlet plug with screw terminals is HERE. Cost is $7.95. The problem is I do not know if the CM Roady's male cigarette plug does anything to the 12vdc from the Powerlet. Anyone know? If that is the case, I will have to use a Powelet-to-cigarette socket adapt like the fourth one down for $19.95.
Firefight911 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 It won't work. Inside that cigarette plug is a step down transformer. I opened mine up, transferred the guts to a Radio Shack job box and then hard wired it in to the fuse block.
Deek Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 Thanks. I was afraid of that! Guess I'll go with the Powerlet to cigarette adapter to start. Later I will use your excellent solution or one of the commercial ones to permanently wire it. Maybe over the winter.........................
beemerFROG Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Hey Phil, thanks for the photos. Do you have a closeup of what wire connects where for the hardwire? It looks like yours is covered up with tape and I plan on doing the same thing. I am also hoping it will reduce some engine noise I'm getting. Thanks.

If you are going to run the Roady directly off the accessory socket, without benefit of a relay, then read my other post re. this--->> http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=33222&Number=357014#Post357014 You may not have the same issues but if you do, at least you'll know whats happening.
DavidEBSmith Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Don't know which Roady you have (original, 2 or XT, it makes a difference), but www.myradiostore.com has hardwired power adapters for the Roady for under $20. Attach one of those to a Powerlet plug and you don't have to mess around with a cigarette lighter adapter coming loose or trying to remove the guts from the stock adapter.
Deek Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 Thanks for that suggestion if I have problems. I'd never in a million years think the small draw would cause any problems. Sometimes I think BMW does the ODDEST things...........
Deek Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 .......www.myradiostore.com has hardwired power adapters for the Roady for under $20. ......... Thanks I ended up getting a two cigarette outlet from one PowerLet socket adaptor. I figured there will be other things I want to power, like a phone charger, maybe a second GPS, etc, etc. Not the neatest install plan, but it ought to work okay. I go the adapter today and plan to get the XM installed this coming week.
bobbybob Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Deek, if by any chance you DO experience the same Canbus issues that I did with the Roady power supply, pls. post it. I am curious if its in the Roady or if my canbus is overly sensitive
