Adventure Rick Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Excuse the duplicate post on a separate thread, but I direly need a pic/scan of the headlight wiring for a '98 R1100RT-P. There are a few complications. Someone who has no business doing wiring has monkeyed with the headlight wiring. The High beams were wired through a toggle switch on the dash, which turned on the blue strobes (!) in the opposite position. Obviously, leaning forward to work the switch for high beams every time is a pain, so I delved into wiring back to original. The high beams (and strobes) got their power from cutting the wires to a couple of the tach/speedo lights and splicing into that for power (me no like). I have restored the tach/speedo lights, and repaired some wires that were cut/spliced in the LH headlight switch. After restoring things back to normal (mostly). I have no lights (parking, tail, low-beam), except High Beam on the momentary position. This is a Police bike, so it has an extra headlight switch on the RH grip that the civilian bikes don't (???). I haven't received my Clymer's yet and need a schematic to help me figure this out quicker than I will by chasing wires. I was an electronics tech and aircraft electrician in the Navy for 21+ years, so I have skills, but no schematic! I believe it's a bad headlight switch, but I still have some cut wires that I have to figure out where they go. Can someone send a pic or scan of the schematic for the headlight circuit to me? I need it ASAP, as a buddy and I are going to ride from WA to CA in a few days.
DavidEBSmith Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 The wiring diagrams for the police equipment can be found at www.bmwmc.net . Some of these include the headlight switch. There's some GS wiring diagrams at http://www.bmwgsclub.nl/artikelen.htm - that may or may not help.
Capt_Steve Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 On my 98R100RTP I have a 2 wire plug that is shorted, apparently it use to go to a switch on handle bar. I took the plug out and had the same symptom where the headlight only works with monmentary high beam. maybe this might help. BTW unshorted it also kills the tail light.
Adventure Rick Posted July 15, 2008 Author Posted July 15, 2008 After days of chasing wires and restoring some wiring back to near-original condition. I have a bike that now has the normal functions of the headlight (on the Left grip). The authority switch on the right grip doesn't do anything, but I'm satisfied until I'm able to have more time. The only thing that's not quite right at this point is the tail light doesn't work. There is a wire that has been run to the tail light (presumably the same problem that Capt_Steve has?!). So, I just have to use a crush splice to splice it into the parking lamp circuit and all will be well enough for the trip. I have to say, that tearing into those multifunction switches on the grips is a job akin to surgery! Ugh! Just as the RV-4 message boards are a great help for working on my airplane, so too is a fantastic message board as this for working on my bike. Thanks for all of your help! The schematics really kept me honest and backed-up my wire chasing efforts. Thank goodness for my Navy training/experience!!! When I'm back home, I'll try to sketch out what was wrong and where and post the information so maybe it can help someone in the future.
