Got2Greys Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I just hooked up a Zumo 550 on my R1200RT to the BMW GPS connector, which is located in between the front forks, at the headset area. I removed the plastic cap covering the connector and drilled a hole in it. I passed the Zumo wires (red and black) through the hole in the cap and inserted them into the respective holes in the BMW GPS connector. Red goes to the red/white wired hole and black goes to the brown wired hole. I pushed the cap over the connector and smeared some waterproof adhesive around the Zumo wires at the site of the hole I drilled. This will keep the wires in place and prevent water leakage. This wiring procedure gives you switched power for the GPS. When you shut the bike down, it has power for about ten seconds or so (you can watch the hazard light switch on the handlebars). BMW sells a connector part for $80 to let you tap into the GPS connector or you can do what I did to save a lot of money.
Satguy Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 BTW, where are you seeing the connector for $80. I work at a shop and we sell them for $25

Got2Greys Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 That is the price the dealer quoted me. Maybe that was the part plus labor.

bobsden Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 does anyone have a link for this cheap gps connector. i got quoted £56 from bmw dealer
Pictou Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 You might want to do some searches here and come up with the part number for the BMW repair connector and then try your dealer again. I think what you are being quoted is the connector for the BMW GPS. There is a cable for the BMW branded GPS that connects to the connector on the front and plugs straight into the BMW GPS. As I recall it is pretty expensive. It may be your dealer is confusing the two. The cable that they are discussing here is listed as a repair connector not as a GPS connector. The repair connector works great. The only trick is that it has three wires and you only need two - you need to get the right two. Again searching here will eventually drag up the information that you need. does anyone have a link for this cheap gps connector. i got quoted £56 from bmw dealer
