John, Northeast Florida Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 At about 1000 miles I noticed some oil specks on on my rear hugger. Thought I went thru some oil, and was concerned it was a leaking rear shock. Cleaned it up and didn't occur again. Having recently returned from about a 6000 mile check, looked under the rear hugger again, and amidst the 'collected road grime' I didn't notice anything. Brought the bike in for its 6000 mile service (at 7000 miles) and was informed of a 'known' issue on some seal relative to the counter-balance ???? weeping very slightly. I was told this has been a known issue, even with some bikes right out of the crate. BMW's advice is that most will 'seat' but some will not. The service to repair/correct this seal is an all-day affair as much has to be torn down. I may wait awhile to see what happens as it has not gotten any worse after 6000 miles on the road and I visually inspected the bike after a 90+ mile return from service and I can't see anything, It's not a real problem, I GUESS, unless the seal gives out and splatters oil on the rear tire. GROAN. FYI to all with '08 RT's.
97oilhead Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Same issue on my 05 RT, plus transmission front and rear input seals. I would be more concerned about oil being splattered on your clutch than your tires. Nick
Missouri Bob Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Same issue on my 05 RT, plus transmission front and rear input seals. I just had the same thing (all 3 seals) happen on my 05 ST at 21K. Bob
