zephyr Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Greetings BMWST! I'm the guy who was the recipient of the "splinal tap" at the motel Thursday morning (or rather my bike was!). My bud Doug and I rode very carefully (slower speeds, careful shifts) along hwy 26 to Portland, then north on I-5 to Seattle, our destination for the day (daughter's house). The spline lube job definitely helped...weird noises gone, shifting easier. Picked up the speed on I-5, but at a very steady pace all seemed well. Just as we approached downtown Seattle, BANG! No more clutch, just whizzing noises as the now shot splines tried, but just couldn't engage. We pulled off on a very busy overpass and called for a tow to my daughter's house, less than 10 miles away...thanks to AAA coverage! Many thanks to all who helped diagnose this problem...you were all correct! I was told it could fail at any time, and am fortunate that I made it so close to our planned destination. Now "Quicksilver" sits safely in my daughter's garage until I can return with a truck to bring him home to Victoria. Now I'm studying manuals and past BMWST renching forums to plan a repair. Special thanks to Wade who stopped at the roadside to help and told us about the Unrally, and Jamie who initiated us into the mysteries of the splinal tap, and all the folks at the rally who helped diagnose the problem, welcomed us at the dining table, and showed what a great group the BMWST is! I'm pleased to be a member now, and will continue to post progress reports (and seek more needed advise) as the repair proceeds. ...Dennis ("Zephyr") PS: Does anyone know how Doc made out?
skinny_tom (aka boney) Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Welcome to the board. Sorry I missed the fun at the Un. This place continues to deliver long after the newness wears off.
Tony_K Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 Well Dennis, though it was a unpleasant reality to find out about your bikes worn splines you couldn't have stumbled into a better situation than the BMWST UNRally to get some help!! Glad you made it to Seattle. Now it's just a matter of fixing that misalignment and replace those busted up parts and your bike will be good to go again!
KMG_365 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Hi "zephyr"! Welcome in from the cold! (great handle too, BTW! ) It was great meeting you and I'm sure glad we were able to get you at least a bit closer to home/family before your poor RT gave up the old SplineGhost. Now I'm studying manuals and past BMWST renching forums to plan a repair. I would suggest a search under the user names "nrp" and "mbohn", delete all the date ranges (which opens the date up to the entire list) and "spline" for a search term. That should give you plenty of reading material. If it were my bike, first I'd look for an 1150RT-P tranny (simply because the 6th gear isn't as tall) from Mike Figielski ("mfigielski" here on the DB) at www.beemerboneyard.com with at least 30K miles on it (Mike can check it out prior to shipping to make sure the splines still look good), second I'd settle for another R1150RT tranny from Mike with similar mileage. Good luck and I hope you get it sorted out quickly and not too expensively . . . in time for the NEXT UnRally--likely in the North East of the US somewhere's! Special thanks to Wade who stopped at the roadside to help and told us about the Unrally Yes, how fortunate we all were!! I too always stop for all bikes on the side of the road--just in case! We "pay it forward" in this world and we all could use an extra deposit or two in the old "karma bank"! Thanks again, Wade!
zephyr Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 though it was a unpleasant reality to find out about your bikes worn splines you couldn't have stumbled into a better situation than the BMWST UNRally to get some help!! I couldn't agree more, Tony! I would suggest a search under the user names "nrp" and "mbohn" Thanks, Jamie...there's certainly a lot of helpful information there. I'm still not certain what course I'll take, but I appreciate the opportunity to learn about this issue by studying all the previous posts.
Kitsap Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 :thumbsup:I've got good karma and mojo going. When you get that beast fixed hop on the Blackball and come down for a ride, we'll do the Peninsula or something. Or heck I'll come up there
