RussInParis Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 We have sometimes stuck a voltage converter (12vdc to 240vac) in the tail of our '02 RT to be able to do things like recharge our portable computer or cell phone while camping, but I'm never sure how long I can leave it on before running the risk of having starter problems the next day. Anybody else do this and actually calculated safe times or have any tips? Russ
smiller Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 You will need to measure the current draw of the converter (with the devices being charged connected to it) and subtract that from the amp-hour capacity of the battery. For reliable starting I wouldn't discharge the battery more than 20-30% from full. Also, if you're going to be doing this a lot I'd suggest using a battery designed for deep cycling as a battery designed for starting won't tolerate repeated discharges very well. One of the better AGM batteries should do the trick.
