Best All around seat: Russel Day-long saddle. If you're less than 180# then the Rick Meyer is almost as good and a lot cheaper than the Russel. Tires: I'd go for the Pilot Road 2s, very nice tire and handles very well.

I am not 180 (more like 200 lbs) and I love my Rick Meyer. Longest single day in the saddle was a about 1100 miles and I was good to go the next day. But seats are like shoes - no one type fits all.

All new BMW seats come with World War 2 Panzer battletank foam as OEM. The Third Reich must have ordered a lot because they are still using the foam from the original order placed in the 1940's. Anything would be an improvement. My last BMW was a K1200RS and I had a Rick Mayer seat and a Sargent seat for it. I liked the Sargent seat look and finish but my butt liked the Mayer seat better.

Nothing beats a Day-Long Saddle on a RT, nothing! I should know, I've tried just about all of 'em. Get a Russell and be done with it........

Unfortunately there is no answer to your question. Everybody's butt is different and the seat that is heaven for one person is hell for another. Try to get to a BMW gathering where you can try out several. Even if only static in a parking lot.

Regarding tyres, it depends upon what your primary goal is; long life? Best grip & handling? Best ride?

Yours are great questions, but there are no clear cut answers.

I tried Rick Mayer's seat and found the improvement not worth the price.

I have a Russell seat now, which I like MUCH better. I recommend Russell.

Everyone's nether areas differ - on a scale of 1~10 my rear end says:

Ekornes Stressless Recliner - 10+

Rick Mayer Low Seat - 7.5

Sargent Low Seat - 5

OEM R1200RT Low Seat - 1 (a generous rating)

The best seat is one that is custom fitted for your body. Bill Mayer (Southern California) and Rick Mayer (Northern California) allow ride-ins. I don't know where you live but if there is a local saddlemaker near by that would be my first choice. Search the forum, there are quite a few write-ups on different saddle shops.

After contacting both Mayers, I found that turnaround at Bill Mayer was going to be MUCH faster than at Rick's. He promised, and delivered, 3 day turnaround. And the seat, vinyl basketweave, is far more comfortable than standard. I have yet to make a trip long enough for pain to set in; with the stock seat, 100-120 miles was all I could do without a break.

While we're on the seat topic, for those of you with Russell Day Longs, did you order the back rest too? and do you find it a worthwhile addition?
