Shadow Rider Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I have an ABS fault on an R1100RT which is easily reset but reoccurs after a few days. The problem as diagnosed by BMW is a fault in the piston of the main ABS unit. My question is "What are the implications of riding with the ABS non functional?" I know that the protection against locking the wheels under heavy braking conditions is lost but what other factors should I be aware of in that situation. For example, The bike has partially integrated brakes, is that feature lost such that front/rear brakes must be applied independently (as conditions require)? Any clarification you care to share would be appreciated as well as suggestions to remedy the problem (short of replacing the ABS unit) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help,
ninermatt Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I didn't realize that the linked brakes were an available option on the R1100 bikes.
azpilot06 Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Don't know what year this RT is, but all 1100's are an ABS2 system, which is not a linked braking system(on the RT). If your ABS system is non-functional , your brakes will just function as good old-fashioned hydraulic brakes. There's no servo-assist function on the 1100's, so you don't have any diminished braking capacity. Theoretically, you could ride it that way forever, if you don't care about the ABS.
Matts_12GS Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Huzband rode his 1150GS that way for several thousand miles before trading it.
Shadow Rider Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 Thanks for the input and for clarifying that the brakes on this model are NOT linked.
