litigator Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 2002 R1150RT. The above failed after 60K miles. It was shredding apart. It was replaced a few weeks ago. In 1K miles, it failed again. Service manager says that he has only seen this bearing failure in K bikes. What's going on?
ninermatt Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Failure at 60k is not unheard of, but I'm willing to bet the tech that installed the replacement didn't pay attention to the proper preload/clearance specs. The dealer is covering the cost correct?
ShovelStrokeEd Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Which bearing? You mentioned roller bearing but that failure is really unusual. There is a tapered roller bearing on the inside of the final drive and an angular contact ball bearing on the outside (next to the wheel flange). The replacement of either bearing requires some careful measurements be taken and shims added/subtracted to achieve the proper preload of the assembly. Your dealer should have the tools and the mechanic the knowledge to accomplish this task, if he/they do not, time to find another dealer that does.
litigator Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 This one: "angular contact ball bearing on the outside". They actually replaced two bearings (Part Nos. 33121242210 and 33121451188) and a shaft seal. The dealer is upright and will cover the cost, but it is a real PITA. My wife and I are leaving on vacation on the bike on the 19th. I don't want any paranoia to set in.
