ninermatt Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Let me preface this by saying the intent of this post is NOT to turn into an oil thread. I recently started running Delvac 1300 in my 99 RT with just a hair over 100,000 miles. Now I may be crazy and I probably am! But My bike runs smoother and is more quiet than I can recall in recent memory. On top of that I also went from 20/50wt. to a 15/40 wt. I have always assumed that a "heavier" oil would do more to quiet valve train noise? So I ask, has anyone else experience a similar phenomenon after switching to a diesel engine designed motor oil, be it Rotella, Delvac or whatever?
Boffin Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Yes, it is one of the two main reasons I run diesel oil, the other being the formulation has higher levels of ZDDP. Andy
ninermatt Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 What is the science behind the noise suppression?
Boffin Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Just a SWAG - I suspect that diesel oil additives give the oil film a higher shear strentgh meaning there is always a slightly thicker film of oil on the striking surfaces of the valve-train components. Andy
