Dances_With_Wiener_Dogs Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Hi Steve here. We've got a new fellow named Nick that has a problem at the UnRally. I'll turn the keyboard over to him and let him explain: I've been having a problem with my speedo for past 3 days. It's been dropping every time I hit a bump. As of today, it has stopped working altogether. It only moves off 0 when I hit a bump. I'm thinking that I have a short in the wire leading to the sensor in the rear drive. Any help/advice would be appreciated. -Nick I know that Nick needs suggestions to get to wherever the cable hooks in at both ends. He's a little hesitant to start unfastening bodywork at the moment. Between the 100+ people we have here, we have all of the tools necessary, but need some advice. Anyone? Bueller, Bueller?
blkvelvt Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 My K1200RS had the same thing happen. My fix was expensive at the dealer and free from a mechanic. Remove the speed sensor cable at the top of the rear end and look in the hole. There is a serrated metal sleeve that picks up the magnetic pulses as it rotates. The sleeve with the fingers came off. The dealer wanted $1,000 to replace the rear end because it's pressed on. A mechanic told me to take a flatblade screwdriver down in the hole and work it back into position. It worked. I didn't have another problem and sold the bike with it still working.
tbarstow Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 The wire to the speed sensor in the rear drive has probably broken. You can do a simple check with a multimeter for connectivity by pulling the connector under the seat.
Nico Suave' Posted July 15, 2008 Posted July 15, 2008 Bingo!! The wire to the speed sensor was broken. Apparently, when I had it in for service this spring they must have had to cut the zip ties that hold the wire to the rear brake line. When it was re-attached, they zip tied the wire right to the metal end of the rubber hose. After the suspension worked up and down for the past 8000 miles it finally cut through the wire. Thanks for the help guys.
