doveguy1 Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 The battery light is on when it is running, only the top abs light flashes, the tachometer bounces as the abs light flash as does the natural light flash out of sync with the abs light. When turning over the starter the voltage drops to 9 volts. 96 r1100rt is the bike, help alternator, belt battery? The battery has been on a charger for about 3 days.
azpilot06 Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 The "battery" light is actually a charging system light. It iluminates when it's seeing more voltage from the battery side than from the alternator side. A quick inspection of the alternator belt (as to whether it's intact or not) should help answer if your problems are coming from that side of the house. The bigger the difference it sees, the more brightly the light illuminates. You will also see the charging light sometimes at and after start, if the rpm's haven't made it high enough to clear the threshold of the charging relay. Along with that, it doesn't appear that the battery is holding up very well under load, given the very low voltage while cranking, and the obvious strain the lights are putting on the system. Do you have access to any other batteries you can temporarily swap in and see if that resolves your issues?
ArthurKnowles Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 My first thought would be to ask how old is the battery. If more than a couple of years, the battery itself may be bad. Particularly as it doesn't seem to hold it's voltage well under load. Even an alternator in good operating condition cannot charge a bad batttery either. So, considering that it is also easier to check the battery first, thent he alternator belt, I'd sure start there.
doveguy1 Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 Thank you guys, Ihave a battery in my slash 5, not sure how old it is I have had the bike less than a year. I have pulled the battery out of the rt, how or who can check it,Dealer,Checker Autozone. The turth is that I had planned on buying an aftermarket battery. Looks like the dealer gets about $175.00and aftermarket batteries are about a $100. Sop I don't wantto take itto them tocheck it and not buy from them
azpilot06 Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 If it's a BMW battery (or many others, for that matter),it'll have a date stamped on the side (for BMW batts) or the top label (for others). The BMW batts are formatted like "03/07". If the battery's more than a year or two old, and it's not a really high-quality battery (like an Odyssey), it's a safe bet to replace it, even if it's not the ultimate culprit. I swapped an Odyssey in for my not-too-old BMW gel cell (which was just over a year old), and have had zero battery-related issues since then (low ABS voltage, etc). Good luck!

Put a new fuse in position #1 in the fuse box. Even if the fuse looks good, replace it. Mick
ArthurKnowles Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Any auto parts store can check it for free. They'll put a load tester on it and tell you tight off if iti si good or bad. Just make sure you charge it up first so you know it has a full charge (as much as the battery can hold anyway) before you test it.
doveguy1 Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 Thank you guys, The Battery checks good by an impendent BMW shop, ZMW's here in Tucson, very impressed with the shop. The belt is old and hard with all kinds of hair line or better cracks, so I will replace it, was going to anyway. I am running out to check the fuse right now and will replace it just to make sure. Better than watching TV Tom

ArthurKnowles Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 It's not his battery Art, it's fuse #1 Well see, I learned something today.

I have sent several friends over there and they all came away happy. As for the temps, have you looked outside lately? It's 67.8 here right now with steady rain and a predicted high of 82.
