black99S Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Noticed the exterior case area around the clutch slave cylinder shows evidence of oil leak. Oily area (it is a film - It's not wet or dripping) is ~5" radius from where the slave cylinder mounts. Has not gotten visibly worse over the last 2,000 km, just a little thicker coating of dust added. How much trouble can I expect? I have read stories of oil migrating to unwelcomed places and resultant clutch burning smells. Could this be benign?
97oilhead Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I would suspect a rear transmission input shaft seal leak, which is located behind the clutch slave cylinder. Same thing started leaking on my 05 RT. Dealer had my bike back at the begining of June and said that there where also leaks on the front transmission input seal and balance shaft seal. Still waiting for appointment in August to get seals fixed. Lots of threads in regards to leaking transmission seals on the 1200. Seems to be a weak point on these great bikes.
Ken H. Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 No it's not benign. The scenario you describe can indeed happen. And then a clutch job is much more involved of course. Get it looked at.

Thanks for the input shaft seal hint - I'll search the forum for information. Had the clutch replaced on the 2006 recall at about 2500km - yea I know they were all supposed to be done before sale but mine was shipped from Quebec to BC and i was riding it hard before the paperwork caught up. Was hoping it was just lack of proper torque (wrench check appears OK) or gasket nick. It will go in for the 30,000km service this fall so whatever does not work can get fixed under warranty. I'll keep an eye on the area. No oil leaks yet anywhere else on the bike. Damn but the transmission jumped out to neutral and back to 2nd gear on a 3rd-2nd downshift twice today...
