SKYGZR Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Anyone here know the happenings if the HAL sensor becomes faulty? The reason I ask is because the trusty K has decided to start acting up. Here's the short version. Awhile ago, lost the neutral light (bulb is OK), yet no light, no big deal. Gear position indicator replaced awhile ago and functions. Even with the side-stand up, and in neutral, have had to engage the clutch to start, once again, no biggie. Starter recently serviced, and new battery. Began to notice that sometimes when turning the key on, the tach needle would jump up to around readline, then settle back down, then would start. Now, it'll turn over, but only for a few revs, then stop. Hit the starter button again, same thing. I can hear it wanting to fire, yet won't "take off". Have a spare Ignition Control Unit which I swapped out, same thing. Local BMW K guy mentioned that since the starter times out after a few revs, it thinks the machine is up and running. He mentioned a possible ground, or open hot somewhere. Any suggestions where to start? (Cross posting this also in the K Bike area).
azpilot06 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I'm sorry, Dave, but I cannot allow that. I have, however, detected a fault in the AE-42 unit. Your local dealer or boneyard would have it, but unfortunately, we're orbiting Jupiter. I assume you're speaking of the Hall Effect Sensor?
Dennis Andress Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I know those things fail on RT's but I've never heard of a failure on a K. Anyone???
k75duck Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 When the HES starts to go on a K bike it will initially start failing when the engine is hot. Your probelm sounds like something else electrical.
SKYGZR Posted November 26, 2008 Author Posted November 26, 2008 Update on this thread. Well after reading about this symptom over in the oil head section, seems that considering the tach needle deciding to just jump up to redline and fall back upon turning the key on, sounds similar. So, through a process of elimination (remove instruments)..same symptom..(disconnect coil leads)..same symptom.. (disconnect vacume switch-this is an early K, and has one of these, later determined of no real benefit, so left off future models)..same symptom disconnect HES ...guess what..turns over like it should ie; starter button depressed, will crank till the battery would wear down. Not fully convinced, plugged the HES back in, removed it from it's mounting so it's just hanging, and not reading the crank revolutions, symptom reappears. Hoping this is the problem, BmrBoneyard happened to have one, it's in my possession at this time..hopefully it will be a Happy Thanksgiving!! Wiring loom, and the rest of the original unit looks just fine, hard to tell why these things might fail.
SKYGZR Posted December 4, 2008 Author Posted December 4, 2008 It's alive, It's alive, it's running again..since I haven't been on it since July 3rd, took it for a brief ride, and it's totally different than the R. I've got 174K plus in the saddle on that machine, yet being off it for just 5 months, will have to get use to it all over again.
