David Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 So, when I unplug the Zumo power, instead of defaulting to battery mode, it just goes dead. Any ideas what might be happening?
bobbybob Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Is there a menu option for external power on & power off...i.e., when external power is removed, unit will shut down or stay on, depending on what is chosen. My GPSmap 478 has these in the menus.
bobbybob Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Will it start up on battery only or does it need external power to run at all? Battery may be faulty and not holding a charge, or battery indicator not accurate and indicating it's dead when it really isnt and shutting unit down. Is your OS version 4.20--the latest as of 5-5-08. Might help....
Dave McReynolds Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 You should be able to turn on the Zumo when it is disconnected from external power, and it should run off the internal battery. Can you do that? If I disconnect my Zumo from external power while it is on, it gives me a warning that it will shut off in X seconds unless I want it to remain on. If you're not getting that warning, something is wrong. Either the program to switch to internal battery is malfunctioning, or the internal battery is kaput. If you hold your finger on the lower right corner of the screen when you turn on the Zumo, it will restore all the original settings. It might be something to try.
JR356 Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Hi, Some folks are having issues that seem to be fixed by removing the battery,checking/cleaning the contacts, then reinstalling the battery. If this and the above suggestions don't work,it's time to call Garmin for a warranty replacement. JR356

Then, about two weeks or so later, it died. Warranty replaced in less than 1 week.
David Posted July 9, 2008 Author Posted July 9, 2008 It won't start up at all on battery power. I'll try the reset thing, and then remove the battery and try to clean everything. If all else fails, I'll contact Garmin. They're great at handling customer service issues, so I'm not worried about it.
Marek Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 David I had the same issue with another unit. When you send it in for replacement make sure that you send the unit ONLY - no cradle, no cords etc. I made a mistake of sending GPS and charging unit and they returned GPS only. It took 40 min on hold and a lot of explaining to get the charger replaced. Mark
99Roadster Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 David, Reseating the battery usually does the trick. Also, try holding the power button for a moment. Sometimes quickly pressing the button several times in succession will occassionally coerce the unit into powering on. If not, you know who to call. This issue seems to occur most commonly after having the unit in a cradle.
David Posted July 10, 2008 Author Posted July 10, 2008 Resetting battery had no effect, and even though it's out of warranty (by two months), Garmin is replacing the battery for free.
Firefight911 Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 If not, you know who to call. Ghostbusters? Oh, stop! You were thinkin' it!
