Wheels Rollin' Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Seems like a really cool idea for a worthy cause, Dave... And what 'memories' (i.e. 'bragging rights') would come along with the experience <>... ~ Bill
russell_bynum Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Good cause, but this made me laugh: "the thrill of taking a parade lap around the track" Parade laps are about as thrilling as sitting in traffic on the freeway.
keithb Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 "Parade laps are about as thrilling as sitting in traffic on the freeway." Totally agree. Can you imagine sitting/riding around the track with 250 of your closest friends? Been there seen it. No thanks. Laguna Seca has been offering parade laps at the m/c races for 15 years. The most excitement I have seen during the parade lap was a guy with a BRAND NEW 996 who dumped the clutch and flipped his brand new bike. Fill in the blanks with whatever adjective you can think of for this guy.
blkvelvt Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 It is a good cause no matter what others think about it as if were a traffic lap. I actually work with the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation here in SoCal as a task force member. I spend months helping on my own time as a volunteer. This is the deadliest disease that kids face today. Every year 37 rides are put on to raise money for kids suffering from brain tumors. See the link http://www.pbtfus.org/rideforkids/ It's amazing how generous motorcycle riders are in general. A lot of riders give for many charities. Ride for kids has rasied 40 million dollars doing things like this and to raise awareness. Many riders respond and give for the kids. Others don't and care about themselves. Some people don't "get it". It's a fundraiser and not a roadracing school. God Bless all the riders who make this happen every year. The SoCal BMW dealers are very involved with this charity. Last year they put on a one day bar-b-que at Rawhyde adventure camp. (See this month's ION magazine) Same charity with a different twist. They try to get every facet of riding involved. We (BMW DAG) are going to take over the SoCal theatres for "The Long Way Down" coming up soon (Stay tuned for details). All monies will be donated to the PBTF. Thanks for mentioning this event. I wish I could go but San Diego and Las Vegas rides are just around the corner and we have a lot of work to do still. Las Vegas bike week will close with the Ride for Kids event starting at the speedway and ending 30 miles later at a park for a picnic and a chance to meet the survivors of brain tumors. The AMA is a major sponsor of all national events. It's about helping others who need help.

I just thought it was funny that they called a parade lap "thrilling".
JerryMather Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 I always get a kick out of the squids doing this and showing us how to wheelie a bike. The best ones loop theirs for us.

Yeah, it's always entertaining. It seems that recently the cool thing to do is pin the motor against the rev limiter. The crowd really seems to like that. It's funny when someone forgets that they're turning 15,000rpms in 1st when they dump the clutch.
