Pat Hillyard Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 My new RT should be in on Thursday, Yee Haw! I'm having the dealer install the BMW CB. The parts man doesn't know if the push to talk switch gets mounted through the hole for handlebar mounted mirros. Can anyone tell me where the switch mounts? I ask this because I also want to have handlebar mounted mirrors. I want to mount tubular engine guards. Can anyone tell me who makes one that won't interfere with servicing the bike. I want tubular guards because the guards that mount on the heads don't look like they will do much. Thanks Pat Hillyard
okiebiker Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Pat; I have the wunderlick engine guards that BMW Santa Cruz sold me. I don't know how good they will be in an actual crash but they are quite easy to mount or take off & I even added foot pegs to them.
Kenn45 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 You should at least look at the guards for the GS Adventure. They fit perfectly and are much more substantial than the plastic variety.
Satguy Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 +1 on the BMW GSA aluminium cylinder head guards. They fit perfect and look nice too. Keep in mind that any of the engine guards, even the tubular metal ones are basically only good for tip overs and VERY low speed "crashes" If you happen to go down at much over 10 MPH, expensive damage will be the result.
Firefight911 Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Another cylinder head guard option with video!! LINKY
Kerry in Mpls Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 My new RT should be in on Thursday, Yee Haw! I'm having the dealer install the BMW CB. The parts man doesn't know if the push to talk switch gets mounted through the hole for handlebar mounted mirros. Can anyone tell me where the switch mounts? I ask this because I also want to have handlebar mounted mirrors. Yes, it does use the mirror hole. A bolt drops into the hole and sticks out the bottom, a bracket is placed on the bolt from below, and a barrel-shaped inside-threaded nut is put on the bottom.
skyskier Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Wunderlich makes the bars that don't interfere with maintenance work. I'm thinking of getting at set for my bike because I think they offer a little more protection than the cylinder mounted guards. I also think they would be a good place for mounting some extra lighting. Santa Cruz BMW handles Wunderlich accessories.
Jpac Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 My bars from Wunderlich should be here friday, I'll try to post an opinion then. Anybody have more to say about them? How hard were they to install. JP
Jpac Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Curious about your foot peg installation. Do you have any pics? thnx JP
Pat Hillyard Posted July 12, 2008 Author Posted July 12, 2008 Thanks for the replies. I think I'll be able to use handlebar mounted mirrors with the push to talk switch. It all depends on how long the mounting thread of the mirror is. I ordered a Wunderlich engine guard and Ilium Works floorboards. I should have them on Tuesday. The boards should install in minutes. Can anyone tell me how long it will take me to install the Wunderlich engine guard? Will I need to remove any tupperware for this install? Pat
RoadJunkie Posted July 12, 2008 Posted July 12, 2008 Mine went in fairly easy and less than 2 hours despite the german instructions. I don't recall having to remove any tupperware, but you will need an extension on your socket for a couple of bolts. Also, I had the powder coated set and I had to file off some of the coating to get parts to connect. You probably won't have the problem with crome. I attached a set of highway pegs on mine for a recent 3.5K mile trip and I have to say I really liked the option to rest your legs once in a while. Sort of like a lazy-boy!
