clutch replacement

Howdy,

I very much enjoy reading about the wrench work that others do on their bikes.

Has anybody attempted/accomplished a clutch replacement on a 1200rt?

 

Care to share the experience?

 

I am curious as to what exactly this job would entail.

I'ts pretty involved, I beleive you have to split the cases and drop the transmission.

 

I've dropped the motor on a sportbike and also replace a wet clutch. It's do-able with a good service manual and good tools. I ended up have issues with some sensors after reassembly... but it still did fire right up the first time. It's the little things that worry me.

 

I'd probably tackle it as a winter project once my bike was out of warranty. You might consider changing the various oil seals while you're in there.

 

Also since all the plastics are off, you might as well do the complete ABS brake service and clutch fluid replacement(if it wasn't done recently) and replace the FD fluid.

 

Just my $0.15 (up from $0.10 due to inflation)

It is an assectomy. Very involved but doable with the right tools, patience, and some experienced help.

 

We did one at the last N. Cal Tech Daze. Took 6 hours of continuous work with a BMW tech looking over, and with his hands on, to get it all done.

Yes, I know that this is not an R12, however, the procedure is the same.

A BMW wrench I talked to, claimed he could do a clutch on a 1200 in half the time of an 1100. FWIW.

I replaced a clutch on a R1200GS. It's a pretty big job. You basically have to remove the rear half of the bike. It's easier to disconnect the rear break lines which means you have to bleed the ABS system after installation. You'll need the special pliers to remove the clamps around the tubes coming out of the airbox to the throttle bodies. I used the Haynes manual and it was written well enough to get the job done. If you decide to do it yourself I have a new BMW clutch plus the gearbox seals and clutch housing screws that I'll give you a good deal on.

Thanks for the insight! I'm not needing such work at the moment. it really sounds like something that only a very experienced DIY wrench should consider. I got to thinking about this level of "maintenance" after I read about Mac Mchugh (in the latest issue of the BMWOA mag). He mentions pulling the tranny regularly (annually?) and greasing input shafts and and replace all the seals.

It has basically been the same for the 1100, 1150 & 1200 series. While a lot of work, it's not overly complex. If someone has done a clutch replacement in most any rear drive auto, they could do a boxer clutch.
