bimmerbeemer Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 A friend just bought a '07 K1200GT and has a couple of questions: 1. Is a lift handle available for puttting the bike on the centerstand? 2. Previous owner told him he cannot charge battery via the accessory plug. So how do you connect a battery tender? Thanks, Al
RichEdwards Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 1. Is a lift handle available for puttting the bike on the centerstand? No, but the passenger grab handle on the left side works just as well. 2. Previous owner told him he cannot charge battery via the accessory plug. So how do you connect a battery tender? Access to the battery on the new GT is very easy...Just remove the two screws on either side of the gas filler cap and remove the battery cover. Then attach an 18 inch cable with an SAE plug to the battery (available from http://www.powerletproducts.com/index.php?mid=0 ) The plug comes out near the handlebars and is available for charging the battery with a Battery Tender. I also use it as a connection to the battery to power my GPS.
Satguy Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 You can charge the battery thru the accessory socket..... You just need the fancy BMW charger to do so. It activates the socket while the ignition is off to allow the charging to take place. You can however hook a standard battery tender directly to the battery.

RichEdwards Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 Guess I'll have to give the BMW charger another shot at the GT.

I'm sure you must know this, because it's probably the same on the GS, but just in case it's useful to others... You must plug the charger in soon after you have powered off the bike, otherwise the canbus shuts the socket off, powers down and it can't be re-enabled. By "soon" I believe it's around 30/40 seconds. Once plugged in and charging, the charger can then tell the canbus to keep the circuit open.
