black99S Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Noticed the windscreen was retracting to home position crooked. Found the left bump stop missing. Hopped to the dealer. Part# 46632309923 for $2.50 (Max MBW price is $1.87) seemed reasonable then found this was the centre 5.5mm high bump stop. Back to the dealer ... part# 46637681432 for -- WOW $8.70 -- almost 10 bucks with tax (Max BMW price is $6.93) for a 20-cent injection moulded part that looks like a tadpole. The rubber must be some exotica UV/oil resistant compound. Whatever, it is fragile enough to disappear. Next time i'll break off the other side and go with none. Part guy's comment - BMW means Break My Wallet.
chaparral Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 I but those little door stops from True Value hardware. A pack of 8 is about $1.79. I stick en on with a dollop of RTV aka (Gorilla Snot). They are available in colors. Bad Design?
blkvelvt Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Bad Design? I believe "Cheesy" design would be more appropriate.
gettysburg Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Pack of 20 rubber/silicon pads is less than $2.00 at your local hardware store. I placed them on the underside of the windscreen support arm; where the original bumper made contact, and haven't had one go missing in over a year.

They are available in colors. Bad Design? A quote I read today "design engineers can put more cost in a design in a day then manufacturing engineers can take out in a year". This appears to be one of those instances. And I have a pack of those clear door stickers in me tool box. Could have had me two beers for the price of that tadpole exotic bump stop. Never again.
aggieengineer Posted October 4, 2012 Posted October 4, 2012 I noticed my windshield rattling on a bumpy road, and discovered one of the Bump Stops missing. With shipping two of these little devils would cost $28! The remaining piece had hardened somewhat, so I wanted to replace them both. I made a mold out of a block of Delrin, and made these out of RTV. One of the holes that these ride in had quite a bit of metal flashing inside, which probably cut through the stem on the missing stop. I cleaned out the holes with a #40 drill bit, coated the stems with a little RTV, slipped them in, and I'm back to riding a rattle-free motorcycle. I'll buy a bottle of wine with the 28 bucks I saved, and toast the fact that I avoided a rip-off.
lkchris Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 Complaining about $8 for a part for a $20K German motorcycle! Luv it!
aggieengineer Posted October 9, 2012 Posted October 9, 2012 How cheap would the motorcycle have to be in order for this part to be over-priced?
David13 Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 I suppose that if you paid $200 for the entire motorcycle, then you could say "$10??!! I'm not paying $10 for that!" But on the other hand I have been given cars and motorcycles, free, and have spent quite a bit on some of them. And have been offered good money for them when I was done. I guess a person just does things the way they want to. Acme makes a replacement part for the windshield. It may be cheaper. You know Acme - Supplier to the Coyote. dc
mbelectric Posted October 10, 2012 Posted October 10, 2012 Complaining about $8 for a part for a $20K German motorcycle! Luv it! +1 Figure shipping and handling. Expect BMW to do that for free? Perhaps if you frequented your local dealer more they'd get to know you and let you have it for 5 bucks... MB>
aggieengineer Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Actually, my "local dealer", some sixty miles away, does not carry this part. In any case, shipping, and I use the term generously since these things could be put in an envelope, should not cost fourteen dollars. The parts themselves are ridiculously expensive at seven dollars apiece. They are a one-piece rubber molding about 5/8" long. I still fail to see how the purchase price of the bike or the country of origin has any bearing on the value of this tiny piece. In any case, it's irrelevant. Please feel free to pay any price BMW demands when your "Bump Stops" come up missing on your $20,000 motorcycle and your windshield starts rattling.
Sailorlite Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 FWIW, I installed a pair of rubber picture frame "bumpers", purchased from Walmart for about $.75 (for 48 pcs.). The first pair has become somewhat deformed but still does the job.
mbelectric Posted October 11, 2012 Posted October 11, 2012 Life is too short to get excited about spending ten bucks at your local BMW shop. Get over it and ride your finely engineered German motorcycle. MB.
