Gear indicates 1-N-2-N-1-2

So I just had a 24 k service done on my newly out of warranty 05, 1200 RT. The issue that I am facing now is that at times it has not started right up… there was just a blank on the gear indicator. But that usually stops quickly. Now on the way home to work today the indicator kept jumping between 2nd.. then N..then 1st then N then 2nd and once or twice 3rd. I did feel a bit of a surge of power and loss at some of these times. The “shifting” of the indicator was rapid.. hardly even showing the numbers .

I have a weekend ride coming up and I am worried…. Any help or advise out there?

The connector on the switch at the rear of the tranny may be dirty and or loose. Clean it up an re seat it. Hope thus helps.

Ughhh.. where would that be.. I am looking in my service manual, but a pointer would be helpful.. thanks! I am thinking that you mioght be right.. the oil filter was loose as well! Oil on the floor makes me free out!!

The only thing I can find in the book is the "Gear position sensor wiring connector" under the down pipe... Is this possibly what we are thinking?

Chuck, read this thread; I posted a photo of the offending connector. You'll need to lie down on the muffler side of the bike, and look up under where the cat converter attachment is, and you'll see the wire. I had to be a little stern with my connector to get it to seat. I used a wooden dowel and a rubber mallet and (gently, now!) tapped it back into its seat.

Based on your comment above, it appears that you may have a bad connection at your battery or ?? Did the person doing your service happen to disconnect the battery?? Check the simple stuff first and then dig into the pot. on the back of the tranny.

Good Luck

You guys TOTALLY ROCK!!!!!

Yes the connector was slid out not all the way but far enough that when I pushed it slid in 1/8 to 1/4 inch! Thanks you all and the picture from the other thread... Ya Hoo!

All in all, took me after reading the post, printing the picture, fixing a light under the bike.. ummm 30 seconds.. or so to see it and push it back in... Oh.. then there was the .. short test ride... longer tomorrow on the commute to work.. hated not riding today.

Again, Big thanks!

The board works!
