Fuel pump

Riding home from work on thursday afternoon. Looking forward to a great weekend and then leaving the following weekend for Wyoming. Bike's running sweet.........then it dies on the expressway. No warning, just a sputter and no power. NUTS! I manage to back up half a block to an exit and roll into a gas station. Try to start several times and make the dreaded phone call. my brother-in-law brings a trailer and 1-1/2 hours later we drop the bike at home. We 4 wheel to Michigan for the weekend and return home today. I immediately start checking the bike. It's got spark.......I guess the Hall Sensor is OK??

No fuel after pulling an injector and spinning the engine over.

I remove the tupperware and pull the tank. I put 12 volts to the pump and NOTHING happens. I tap on the pump with a screwdriver handle and it runs! Reinstall tank. Try to start bike. NOTHING! Tap on fuel tank the pump runs briefly and quits. Still no start. I pull the pump out again. Hook 12 volts to it, nothing happens. Tap on it and it runs. Time for a pump! Hope someone has it in stock and can overnight it. The weather is way too nice to drive a car. Any thoughts......is the pump the right diagnosis or am I overlooking something??

Sounds like the pump to me.

The pump is more or less generic and you could probably find a replacement at an auto parts store.

OK, if this works out I take full credit, if not it's your fault, Ed

I decided to find a replacement fule pump and filter without resorting to a BMW dealer or an aftermarket supplier. I wanted my bike to run NOW! I took Ed's advice and did some searching. I came up with a pump and filter from my local Napa store. The pump wasn't in stock, but they brought it from the warehouse and I picked it up after work. The pump is a little shorter, I had to make the rubber line longer to attach it. The pump came with a new 6" long hose rated for inside the tank. It also came with a new strainer sock. I had to change the wire ends to quick connects, they also came with the pump :) I could not use the rubber vibration isolater that was on the original pump. The inlet is too large for the isolater to fit over. No big deal. The filter fit perfectly. I also purchased some 06 size fuel clamps at the same time to install the new pump and filter. The total bill with tax was $104.71. The BMW pump lists for $273.21 and the filter is $20.03. I saved an easy $200 by using the generic parts. I test rode a few miles. cranked the RPMs up for a stretch. The bike seems fine. I guess I'll test it next week when Barb and I leave for Wyoming and Colorado for 2 weeks

The Fuel pump # is Napa P74095 $88.91 The instructions indicate that it fits a Chrysler or a Ford.

The filter is Napa # 3032 $4.99

If all goes well, this may help someone else on the road or who wants to save some money.

Great job Rob. Sounds like you were quite the resourceful guy there. $200 here, $200 there. It all adds up quickly doesn't it? At least I don't have to worry about a filter for my fuel pump.

$274 my eye.....Try $375. The prices haven't been updated yet....

Well I guess he could have just left it off... then he wouldn't have to worry about it either... ;)

Had the same problem myself only yesterday! solved it this evening with a fuel pump from a 3.9 Land Rover Discovery which was blagged from a customer of mine. Fair exchange is no robbery after all. Only minor mods needed.

Damn! I will never pass up a used pump again!
