Attention East Coast friends! :D

I'll be flying from Los Angeles to Charleston for a business meeting, July 28th through August 1st. I can't take the bike, and won't have any time for riding anyway. It'll be a working trip. But... I may get off early any afternoon during the week, and I've never been there! What should I see, do, photograph... if I have a chance?

There's no shortage of stuff to see and photograph in Charleston, the old town area is very scenic with a lot of history, they have an excellent tourist info centre. There are guided tours of the old town which are worthwhile to get a quick history and background of the place. Charleston is like Boston, but with charm.

Everybody please note that I said something nice about a place east of the Rockies!

There's an indoor/outdoor market in old town and an aquarium along the waterfront. It is sticky, moist, humid hot there now so dress appropriately. Catch an evening Riverdogs game at their very nice stadium. There is also a military institute and an Air Force Base at the airport.

I'd easily second all of what's said above... Your greatest time|experience value? It really depends on what interests you have... Architecture? History? Regional culture? Southern hospitality & charm? Do a little research before going to ensure your free time can be well spent -- as I'm sure you'll do... Have some local food too... The Carolina Low Country possesses a breathtaking beauty all its own... Having spent nine years of my life there -- 8th grade, high school and college -- I'd actually love to go back for some traipsin' about... It's been far too long since I was there <>... Anyway -- enjoy! Safe travels always...

Whatever you see or photograph do take the time to consume some Shecrab Soup. Similar to a nice lobster bisque, complete with sherry. A low country special that really should not be missed.

I have been told that this is a don't miss if you are in Charleston.

Definitely a worthy place to visit, and we only got to see part of it before getting rained out.

I would strongly recommend the battery park along the waterfront, there are a few rooftop bars and restaurants that have tremendous views of the city as the lights go down, some cool fountains along the river etc.

We ate at both Hank's and Magnolias and the food was simply excellent. Per Shawn's recommendation, dessert at Kaminsky's is the ticket afterward. Trust me ( ok, Shawn too)...

Oh, and if you call a cop while you're there (at least this one....)

where are you staying? If you have a choice, there are a number of charming hotels down in the Market area downtown and you'll be within walking distance of just about everything historic and some really great eating.

It's been a couple of years since I've been down there but prior to 2005, I'd go there at least 1x/week on business.

I never had time to really explore the place cause I was always working but I did do some serious eating in that town

 for Hank's seafood.

The Hominy Grille is a great lunch place.

For some real flavor of Charleston with a high level of class, try Anson Restaurant.....fantastic food, and probably the best Creme' Brule I have ever had.

Just about any of the seafood places at Shem Creek are good, a little less high scale but again, a real taste of Charleston. Try the Low Country Boil you will not be disappointed.

Someone mentioned Kaminsky's...if that is the dessert place connected to T-Bone's on Market St., +1....outstanding desserts!!

Well...It didn't hapen before, but it is now.

Original trip got moved to Sept. 1st thru 6th. I'll be staying in MT. Pleasant, very close to Patriots Point. I'm told my work hours will be from about 1pm to 10 pm each day, so I'll have mornings and a rental car to myself. Thanks for the sight seeing tips, and if anyone is close enough, I'd meet you for breakfast or a coffee if you don't mind me being in a cage.

I'm praying that "Gustav" stays west, remnants of "Fay" go away, and the other ones brewing in the Atlantic will let me sneak in, do my work, and sneak out.

Enjoy your trip, Dave. I've only been to Charleston once, for a week on business, in the old town. I really enjoyed the food and the sights.

You will enjoy Charleston. I was in Charleston every 10 weeks for 4 years from 1985-1989 and it was my favorite city to visit in S.C. and N.C. as far as cities go. Your camera will get a lot of use. Have a blast.
