50cc Jax to San Diego

I'm thinking about another IBA ride and since I've never been to the left coast 50cc appeals to me.

I did read stories and suggestions at IBA site, but am curious about some advise from this group and possibly some company for the ride.

There are several of us that live in Jax, one even at the beach. We'd be glad to host you for a send off, & depending on the schedule, ride out with you for a distance. There's also a couple of guys in Tallahassee that just itch to welcome 50CC riders with their ticket books. grin.gif Just kidding. If your lucky, you might even get an escort through there.

Fill us in on some details, & we'll see what we can work out.

that sounds great - I'm thinking end of this month - no definite dates yet. On my way back I'm going to stop in San Antonio and my wife is going to fly in for a day or two.

Depending on your dates, you're welcome to stay here with us at the San Diego end if that's your goal. Jamie and I are both on the Iron Butt witness list. We're about 12 miles from Ocean Beach which is the most common end point for a 50CC ending here. PM me if you're interested and I'll give you more info.

Thank you Leslie - that would be lovely - let me get all my details figured out and I'll be in touch.

It looks like a perfect starting point - I'm thinking of the weekend of 5/23 but that's the Memorial Weekend - I'm not sure if the traffic would be a factor or not.

My K12RS has about 150-160 miles range with 1 gal reserve.

How much of an issue is that in a 50CC ride? I'll need to make 14-15 fuel stops.

I noticed the ride report from our 2006 100CCC is listed on the front page of the Iron Butt website...ride report

Personally, I think the right to left leg (Jax to SDO) is easiest, as you get to ride with the sun across time zones, so you'll have slightly more daylight than when you're heading east.

Advice ... make sure you make the HOV lane through Houston if it's open. It's a huge time saver. Beware of strippers at the truck stop in Seguin TX.

If stopping in San Antonio, I would not leave Jax as early in the morning as I would if I was planning to make Junction or Ozona for the night. Get into San Antonio after dark, then sleep so that you have less dark deer time getting through West Texas. The deer were pretty bad in 2005 when I crossed in April, and again in 2006 when we crossed back and forth in late May. Anything to avoid the deer is a good thing, IMO.

Be careful between Ozona and Fort Stockton.....Van Horn and El Paso.....both are near 100 miles between gas stations.

Thank you for all the advise - I think this will take more planning than I anticipated - I was just going to get on the bike and ride. I guess I need to read more of the reports from 50CC and make some notes.

Please keep coming with all the suggestions - they are appreciated.

For planning purposes, there are two sources I recommend:

1) The Next Exit - truckers guide to services offered at every exit along the US Interstate system. I used it for planning my first BBG, and then my first 50cc.

2) Motorcycle Tourers Forum (MTF) - they have a list of all validated gas stations along I-10/I-8 from Jax to SDO. Basically, they periodically go out and check the existance of gas stations, hours, pay at the pump or not, and accuracy of receipts obtained from the gas stations. I took the entire 2005 list and made it into a list of Garmin waypoints. I had my fuel stops pre-planned, but having the entire list of validated gas stops in the GPS allowed me to revise my plan when West Texas winds took a big hit out of my fuel economy.

I had a little more range on my crossings, stopping for fuel about every 230-240 miles or so.

Outside of that, just make sure you can keep the wheels turning as much as possible.

Gas is around...I think the bigger picture to look at is the weather...

Have fun,

the ride is on - here is the plan.

I'm going to leave Ft Mill SC on the morning of 5/23 and head for Jax. My brother in law lives in Jax so I'll spend a night with him. I would like to - if possible - get together for dinner with some of you who live in that area if anyone is interested please PM me. On the morning of the 24th about 8:00AM I would like to depart from Neptune Beach and head West. The plan is to go as far as I can on the first night. The goal would be Ozona TX.

Our friend Whip offered to put me up for the night if I'm so inclined and left it up to me if I'll take him up on it. I'm hoping if the weather, traffic and my rear end cooperates to get pass San Antonio on my way out. The next day I'm going to ride again and again depending on the weather, traffic etc will try to go as far as I can before I catch some zzzz's. I need to be in San Diego by 7AM to make the ride count for 50CC's. Leslie offered to take me in at whatever time I arrive which is again very generous - thank you.

My wife Ann is going to fly to San Antonio on the 28th so I need to be back there by noon to meet her at the airport. We are going to spend 3 days around town, hope to meet Whip for dinner, look around SA and on the 31st Ann flies back home and I'm going to get back on the road to SC. Any suggestion for a route between San Antonio and Charlotte, NC are appreciated

All those plans are subject to change if half way I'm miserable and I feel that it's too dangerous to continue, I'm going to quit enjoy the ride and try again another time to complete 50CC.

I'll keep my cell on Auto Answer - and the number is 828-612-9046 - if you catch me singing that's a good sign.

I hope to see the left coast - and enjoy the ride - appreciate all the support from all of you.

Look forward to meeting you on the 23rd. Hopefully the Jax Crew will make a good showing for you.

As a point of interest, when I did my SS1k to San Antonio, it took seventeen hours flat. Left just after midnight, & rolled in to Whip's driveway just after 5. FYI for your trip planning.

+1 on the Houston HOV lane. It was a HUGE time saver for me.

Of course, the cop escort didn't hurt, either.

Ride safe, and say hi to my brother Whip if you see him.

Marek,

Good luck on your ride!

I am heading down to JAX on May 23rd as well. Will have to leave in the early afternoon though. I am likewise planning on leaving at 8:00 on the 24th. Do you mind if I crash in on your start - witnesses, getting pointed in the right direction, etc?

I am attempting a 100CC.

I wish you the best my friend  I'm going to try and rack up the miles around Western NC for the next few weeks (alright, one week I'll be up in canada) until I move out to StL. I'll be right downtown if you are ever riding accross 70 and need a stop in the middle of the country.

Ride smart as always and enjoy every hour
