MNCruiser
I haven't heard of it happening, but that doesn't mean much. Thankfully you caught it when you did though. Could have been a real dissaster. Glad to hear you are ok. Link to comment

Quinn
I've had it happen on a Jeep Cherokee front brakes coming back out of the mountains. The brakes would get hot, the pads would expand and stay stuck out. Rotors warp and the entire car shakes. Pulled over and let it rest while I ate lunch and figured out an action plan to get home. After lunch, thing cooled off and all was well for me to get home and get service on it. I was told that it was fairly common with the new pad compositions. The final answer (after it happened twice again), was to replace the cylinders. Link to comment
Albert
I had it happen on my shovelhead Harley a number of years ago. At that time they had an adjustable rod that ran to the back brake. I had installed new brakes and adjusted the rod to take out excess play in the pedal. The rod ran along the exhaust pipe and, after coming up to temperature, expanded enough to not allow the brake to disengage. I had no flames but I turned the rotor a lovely shade of blue. Glad you got it put out. Sounds like the making of a good Diet Sprite commercial in there somewhere. Link to comment
Matts_12GS
My 98 RT did it. Brake wouldn't release and I tried to limp it home from work. Disk got hot enough to ignite the rubber boot around the FD pivot. Link to comment
AndyS
My back brake did not disingadge all the way. Has anyone ever heard off a back brake not disingaging all the way. Wow! If it is any consolation, yes my back brake (1150RT 2003) for some reason hangs up. The disc has 'blued' on a few occasions. It is often heard 'clacking' as it cools down. I have posted a request on these pages and unfortunately never got to the bottom of what causes it. I have rebuilt the calipers with new pins, new slides and new rubbers. The problem is less pronounced, but still there. I don't like it, but have had to live with it 'till I get it solved. The bike rides fantastic. I declutch and it free wheels with no noticable rapid deceleration. I wheel it about, and it is no more difficult than any other bike. So what gives..Who knows I hope your dealer resolves it. Let us know what he thinks. Andy Link to comment
Delboy
Does the reservoir cap have an air vent?I had this problem on a car one time, when the brakes were applied they would stick on,the fault was traced to a blocked pin hole in the reservoir cap. Link to comment
Ken H.
Does the reservoir cap have an air vent? On the 1150 the rear wheel circuit is fed from an independent reservoir in the ABS unit and yes it has a monstrous vent. Share with the front circuit BTW, so a vent issue would not likely cause a sticking issue on the rear only. If it was a problem with the rear control circuit sticking on the servo whine when the brakes were not being applied would be obvious I would think. If the caliper itself sticking is absolutely ruled out, and the servo is never on when it shouldn't be, about all that is left is a malfunctioning ABS unit. Unfortunately. Link to comment
Davey
My 04 R1150R did it. I was getting close to home and I smelled burning and pulled into the driveway and it was smoking and the rear drive boot had a big hole burned in it. I took the caliper off and the brake pad just fell out in pieces. I guess the pad came apart and lodged in between. Anyway, the dealer sent me new pads out and then it still got hot so the dealer told me not to ride it and took it in and replaced the rotor; they said it was warped; they did it under warranty. I rode the bike another 40,000 miles and it was fine but for quite awhile I would feel the caliper to make sure it wasn't hot. Link to comment
tomk99r11
The rear brake caliper can lock up if the adjuster on the actuator that the brake lever pushes on is mis-adjusted. The thing can lock on and heat builds up real fast, can smoke, melt boots and aps sensors, seals in calipers, etc. This can have the same affect as pads being shot. Link to comment
HairyCannonball
The right front caliper on my '05 R12RT did that..smelled it and felt it dragging before it caught fire, but it did ruin the rotor. Rotor got hot enough to turn blue. Local dealer replaced caliper and rotor under warranty. It was a mechanical rather than a hydraulic problem as the left caliper was fine and they are teed together. AviP
I have a Diet sprite in the side case ...NOOOOO the OTHER SIDE case!!!!!!!!!!! I shake and aim and out goes the fire. That should remind you to carry regular Sprite next time. Seriously, that priceless. How old/worn are your pads? Could they have come loose/broken? Link to comment

awagnon
Seems unusual to replace the rear pads on a 2005 bike. How many miles were on the pads you replaced? Maybe they've been dragging for some time to wear out so soon. If not, then the fact you had new pads put on two weeks ago seems like more than a coincidence and points to a brake caliper problem rather than an ABS malfunction. Link to comment
bdspler
12k ......it was a cop bike for 6200 of those miles! Link to comment
