Mister Tee
I love the room in the stock BMW side cases, but they're ungodly wide - worse than a 'wing. The cases severely limit my ability to lane split effectively, which is a big issue where I ride. Has anyone replaced the stock side cases with a more narrow aftermarket cases? I hate shelling out all that cash for new cases when the stock cases themselves cost a fortune. Too bad BMW didn't offer narrow cases as a dealer option. Link to comment
RedMac
There are city lids for the cases, but not available in the US. See this thread... http://bmwsporttouring.com/ubbthreads/sh...true#Post854359 I had a set of city lids for my old K1200RS cases and I loved them.... I wish BMW would offer them in the US. Woodie
Look for a set of "city" lids. That's what comes stock on the RTP (CHP) spec bikes. edit: NM...you've got one o' them new-fangled 1200 thingies. Link to comment

That's what I was thinking - I haven't seen any of the new CHP 1200 RT-P's, but I have seen a few other new 1200 RT-P's out, and I'm sure they have more narrow cases. If I could just swap the lids out that would be great. I'll search for those then, thanks. Link to comment
HexHead
Don't the police bike bags open at the top? Link to comment
Mister Tee
Don't the police bike bags open at the top? Yes. They do. Definitely different cases. I wonder if those could be ordered as a replacement. Link to comment
Woodie
IIRC, someone had a source for R12 RTP narrow bags in Japan. Link to comment
RedMac
I wonder if you just ordered the RTP cases from a dealer what would happen??? I looked at Max BMW Parts Fiche and they list a part number for the case http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/MainDiagrams.asp?mospid=48423 So you'dLooks like at a *miniumum* you'd need 46547693193 - Left Case Holder Official ( $236.00) 46547693194 - Right Case Holder Official ( $236.00) 46547693165 - Official Case (2 ea @$268.00) 46547697891 - Covering Left - Titan Silver ($108.00) 46547697892 - Covering Right - Titan Silver (108.00) 46547697905 - Finisher Upper - Titan Silver (2@ 124.00) I'm not sure this stuff comes with the assorted mounting bolts and crap. Plus once you mount it, you couldn't use your old bigger cases without tearing all the bracketing off. Grand Total = $1472.00 !!!! PLUS (bolts and stuff I'm sure). You have a choice of two colors. Alpine White or Titan Silver. The pricing is with the 20% discount that Chicago BMW gives.. I guess I'll wait for city lids Whew... Link to comment
Mister Tee
Why the "f" would BMW manufacture two different side case mounts? That makes no sense! Link to comment
eda
At the end of the day, even if BMW did make city covers, you'd probably end up paying over $500. For that kind of money have you considered a top case? Even the C5-A of all topcases, the BMW 49l is $650 - $700 at Chicago BMW. 'Course it's not color matched, but that's a different story. Yes that occurred to me, and I may just go that route. It looks like a reasonable option. I'm not crazy about being unable to swing my leg over the tail, but I can probably live with it. RedMac
I know having the city lids on my K1200RS really made a difference. The bike felt wide with the standard case lids on (and it was). I used the city case lids 80% of the time and only moved to the wide lids for trips. The R1200RT is no different. I often use the bike just for work commuting and don't really need all the space the standard lids provide. As far as the topcase, to me, the bike doesn't look near as nice with the topcase on. I do have one and only use it for multi day trips. I for one would like some city lids. For the K1200RS they were about $170 bucks new complete. For the older K-bikes, they were unpainted black like the standard lids, so I understand that painted ones would cost more. Would I buy them if they were 500? No.. I'd just suck it up and make due. But I can hope can't I? I think in Japan they are about $350 for the set. I might pay that... I just wish they would give us the option. Edit - I just looked.. the unpainted city lids from the French site are $364.00 (euro 250).... You have to wonder why BMW doesn't offer them here? Link to comment
hawaiiansti
Why the "f" would BMW manufacture two different side case mounts? That makes no sense! Probably because the cases mount more forward on the bike than the stock ones.. Link to comment

The more forward cases give better weight distribution, but at the cost of passenger seating ability - which isn't an issue on an RT-P. Link to comment
1NOTRED
I wanted narrow case lids for my RT, too. Found and bought same at futurmoto.com in France. Not as stiff as double-wall lids; not even as stiff as older city case lids, but I like them as the width is more acceptable. Paid 250 euros (about $375)! No shipping cost. These are black plastic made from hot-formed 2mm plastic sheet with 2 metal closing clips. Don't bother with the bolt kit they offer for 10 euros; the old hinge bolts work fine. Link to comment

Also so the officer can get into them without getting off the bike since they are top loading. Link to comment
