uPrIGHTon2 Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Howdy, I'm new to the list and just bought my first bike in years, a 2004 R1150RT, I cant WAIT for spring. I need to take care of a couple of things and one of them is a new back tire, I just don't like the looks. The front is a new Metz Z6, so I'm thinking of a new Z6 for the back. What is the going rate for a mount balance? I was quoted $56 and I thought that was a bit steep? Am I wrong? Just trying to be smart. Thanks, this list is a wealth of info, I hope I can contribute. Gerry
SageRider Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Welcome to the asylum. Tire mounting charges are highly variable depending on location and size of market. In my area, it's about $100 for a pair with shop removing wheels from the bike. I have no idea what would be charged if I brought just the wheels in. As far as MEZ6s, They are a good tire with average wear and great grip. The only downside to me is that the rear tire has no tread crossing the center of the tire. As a result, it is very difficult to tell when the tire needs replacement. It is fairly common to wind up with a narrow strip of cords showing as the indicator that replacement is needed. As a result, I prefer the Avon Storms. For higher mileage, the Pilot Roads (I haven't yet tried the new Pilot Road 2 tires). If you do a search over the last year for tires, you will get more information than one could ever want!
Baba_ORiley Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 I'm about to have some Metzlers put on my bike tomorrow at local non-BMW motorcycle shop. I was quoted $97.50 plus tire disposal fees. So it should be around $105 or so for me to ride there on the old tires (with new ones strapped on to my bike) and ride home on the new ones.
11101110 Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 I was charged about $15 for the mount and balance. I took the wheel to the dealer as I was doing the brakes also. I had bought the tire previously form the dealer.
Tony_K Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 20 bucks for 2 wheels with new tires I bring in. Peel, mount and balance. Wheels off. I take the old tires home with me. As stated above pricing varies WIDELY.
OoPEZoO Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 First off....Welcome! That is a pretty normal price for getting tires swapped around here......and that is if you take the wheels and tires in yourself. It would be more if I just rode the bike in. Most shops in my area won't even touch tires that you didn't buy from them. Between that, the price the rest charge, and the fact that I went through 2 sets of tires last year.....I just ended up buying the stuff to do my own tires. I've never looked back since.
Silver Surfer/AKAButters Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 I just bought a mounted rear Z6 at SWMoto for $156. out the door. Tx included.
smiller Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 I just ended up buying the stuff to do my own tires. I've never looked back since. Yep, for the cost of a few tire changes you can own the equipment to do it yourself. If you only need a tire change once every two years or just really don't like mechanical work then this may not be the best option, otherwise you will make the investment back pretty quickly and save a lot of expense and inconvenience while gaining a lot of satisfaction.

Gerry Gerry, tire mounting & balancing is a cash cow for most dealers & repair shops.. A good number of shops do charge a pretty penny to mount & balance motorcycle tires.. In every area there are usually a few that will mount & balance a motorcycle tire for a reasonable price,, they are just difficult to find unless pointed out by someone that has used them before.. You will probably have to call around to as many independent shops you can find in your immediate area to see when the prices are & what you get for the price.. Keep in mind that it doesn’t have to be a BMW dealer or even a motorcycle dealer,, there are probably more than a few independent all brand motorcycle repair shops in your area that can change tires.. The going price for mount & balance in my area from the larger motorcycle dealers seems to be in the $40.00-$50.00 area if you bring the tire/wheel in.. A few of the independent smaller shops will be in the $20.00-$30 range for the same mount & balance.. There is also a few in my area that charge less but have rather crude tire changing equipment so the chance of rim paint damage is higher than at a major M/C dealer with modern equipment.. If you don’t already have the tire you might get a quote from the major dealers in your area on a total price of a tire including mounting & balancing.. A local dealer to me (not a BMW dealer) sells his tires at close to his cost if they mount & balance the tire.. The mounting & balancing is towards the high end cost wise but if you figure the total price it is on par with other places.. I think he makes this offer to keep his tecs happy & making easy money on the tire mounting/balancing labor.. Twisty
keithb Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Hi Gerry Welcome to the board. Congrats on your new bike!! My recommendation would be to take the wheel(s) off the bike and look for an independent m/c shop to mount and balance the tires for you. I have that done at a local shop for $15 per wheel so $56 to me is quite high. Another suggestion when you find that shop to mount your tires is to buy your tires online (ie. Southwest Moto Tire). They have great prices, very good service, and when you order two tires the shipping is FREE. Have fun on your new bike.
philbytx Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Around here its $20 per wheel for a tire job (dismounted, not on bike).
Dick_at_Lake_Tahoe_NV Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 In Reno or Carson City, NV from Independent Bike shops, it's $33/tire for BMW, $24/tire for other bikes. They claim they need a special adapter for BMW wheels and they're trying to recover their cost.
lorenw Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Our local bmw dealer quoted $65 if i bring in my own tires, this is for them to do the entire job, with balance. That is dirt cheap. My goldwing costs $125 to have the tires done.
Damean Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I got a pair of metzlers put on recently. $45 per tire to mount and balance, but it's $65 if I got the tires elsewhere. Got a hell of a deal on the tires though I'm pretty sure the shop undercharged me by mistake.
rondob4 Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 All dealers in my area, regardless of brand, won't mount tires purchased elsewhere. I use an independent shop; ride in, ride out service to mount & balance two tires I buy on line costs $70. It pays to check around.
CoarsegoldKid Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Recently I tried to change my own rear tire. Not being able to mount it I brought the tire and wheel into my BMW dealer. 49 dollars. I think it's the same cost if buying the tire from them.
randy Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 ride the bike down to Atlanta, we have a NOMar tire changer, and you can do your own wheels for 5.00 (just covers the cost of consumables) Ok Atlanta maybe a little far, but generally there is a group of riders that share tire changing equipment. Check around your area, you might find an individual who has the equipment and will show you how to do it. If not, then go buy a Harbor Frieght tire changer, around 80.00 on sale, a Mitch MoJo bar 99.00 and Mitch rim clamps, 25.00 and you can change any tire you want. Charge other riders in the area 15.00 per tire, change 15 tires and your equipment is paid for.
swilson Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I stay away from BMW dealers for tires. Last time I checked with them they wanted $180 for a $130 tire... and the $180 didn't include mount/balance. I found a small motorcycle store that keeps a good selection of tires in stock, has good prices (same as the best internet price I could find), and will mount/balance for free if you remove the wheel and bring it to them. For anyone in the Bay Area... its Santa Clara Cyclery (which is actually in Sunnyvale).
ltljohn Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Last tire I bought in a pinch was from a dealer, $250 for the rear Z6 on my RT. I have a local Cycle Gear store, they have reasonable prices and mount and balance for $20
