Came across an image of a R1150RT-P on the 2005 Iron Butt belinging to Heide Still and the bike has hard aluminium panniers installed. Anyone done this? I would be interested to see how they were fitted.

I'm no help to you, but I've been interested in alternative hard luggage for an RT as well. Do you have a link or digi-copy of the image you saw?

Looks like she was running Happy Trails luggage. No info.

Thanks for the pic - maybe the folks from Happy Trails have some more info.

post if you find anything.

I sent an email to the contact edress from the Happy Trails website - attached the pic to the message and asked if they had any knowledge of the set up or suggestions as to how something similar might be done. If/when I hear back from them, I'll put the information here.

Necessity and/or the need to spend money are the fuel for invention. grin.gifthumbsup.gif

They kind of look like painted up amo cans.

Got a fast but short reply this afternoon/evening - here it is in its entirety:

That is the Police version RTP. We did that for Heidi and have not done any others.

I haven't inquired further as I'm more in a contemplative state right now and figure it's not worth prying if I'm not yet up to buying, but maybe if someone else is ready to go more information could be wheedled out of them.

I still think they are some kind of ammo cans. If you go midway down this link you will see someone has a similar mod for 20mm ammo cans: [unquote]

I'm sure the metal panniers were based on ammo boxes but Jessies/Happy Trails/TourTech and others have been making these for years.

Jesse bags will fit on a 1100R but they don't have mounts for the RT. not sure what it would take to fabricate them. It sure is something I would be interested in. I have Jesse on two of my GS's, way nice in terms of inside dry storage.

Do you have any idea if your GS mounts would work , or could be modified to work?

Maybe (some rainy day) you could take the mount off the GS and see how it would fit to the RT.

Just askin'

Good pics of the mounts where they attach to the bike would be good too. (in lieu of taking your bike apart)
